no-name
Hello, Surprisingly, I didn't find any post about this specific subject. Apologies if the question was already asked. I was wondering if someone wanted to work in the US after completing a FM residency in Canada, would they need to take the USMLEs? My partner is American so we are looking at our options for after my residency. For example, if we live in a city close to the US border to get closer to his family, what would I need to do locums or part-time work in the States? If you have any resource, I'd be interested. Thanks
indefatigable
This is covered on other threads. There's two things to unpack: state licensing (including board) requirements federal work permit/immigration requirements With respect to 1), US MLEs are MOSTLY NOT required. However since FM is only 2 years in Canada vs 3 years in US this means getting licensed in the US is a little more tricky - you need either another year of approved FM training or live in the US for six months and "be involved" in FM before being eligible to write their FM Boards (supposing you have passed CFPC). You will have to look into various state licensing options to know what applies to you. Keep in mind that 1) may change since Canadian medical schools will soon no longer be LMCE accredited so it's hard to know how states will react - i.e. "grandfather in" grads before 2025 or simplify requirements across the board. https://www.theabfm.org/become-certified/i-am-certified-country-outside-united-states https://www.ilw.com/articles/2002,1029-siskind.shtm https://www.ama-assn.org/sites/ama-assn.org/files/corp/media-browser/public/img/licensure-comparison-imgs-usmgs_1.pdf (for IMGs .. but applicable) In terms of 2), this can depend on many factor including whether you have a formalized marriage with your partner. If so, then you are eligible for a green card and shouldn't need the MLEs except possibly for 1). If you aren't married, then you may need a H1B visa to work in the US in which case the US MLEs ARE required. http://www.mdgreencard.com/temporary_h1b_residents.html shikimate and no-name
