To Ian: Poll Idea

Guest QG

Recommended Posts

Ian,

With recent threads that I've been reading in this med student forum, perhaps you can add a poll asking med students if they prefer to specialize or go into family medicine. I think it would be interesting to see what the thoughts of the people on this board are.

<title>Choosing now that you have a choice! HELP!</title>

<pagetext>I know that all of you who haven't heard yet are hating me right now for posting this but I am seriously having a hard time deciding which acceptance to accept.

My top two choices were Queen's and Mac and luckily I got into both. I am leaning towards Mac b/c of the 3 year program since I am not really interested in sitting in a lecture hall every day all day and I have NO money to go through med school so 3 years of debt is much more appealing.

I have heard that Queen's is much more prestigious and since I don't know exactly what specialty I would like to pursue (radiology, emerg, peds) maybe the 4 year program would be beneficial.

SO HERE IS MY QUESTION,

Do Mac grads learn exactly the same stuff as at other schools, are they as competitive as other graduates when it comes to grabbing a competitive specialty in the residence matching? This may seem like a silly question, I believe by hard work I can get any specialty I want but am I risking something by going to Mac.

Please all Mac students out there don't take offense, I just wonder why alot of students put Mac at the end of their choice list. I want to make sure I make the most informed choice. If you know of someone I can talk to please let me know.

<title>Western or Queens??????</title>

<pagetext>Hi everyone.

Before I start, I want to tell all those who were rejected or waitlisted that I am not trying to be insensitive to you in any way by making this post. I empathize with all of you.

I am in a situation where I have to decide between Western and Queens by early next week. Although I've thought about the possibility of having to make this decision many times, now that the situation has actually come to fruition, I am finding the decision to be very difficult. So, I would greatly appreciate any honest and direct opinion on what both schools have to offer. I have thought about a lot of pros and cons relating to both schools, so maybe that's the best place to start.

My gut is telling me to go to Queens. Why? Well, its mainly because I had a very positive interview experience at Queens. I was impressed by the students I met and the professionalism displayed by my interviewers. I left Queens feeling like I could really be happy there. My understanding of the Queen's curriculum is that it is a hybrid curriculum that combines lecture-based learning with both problem-based and self-directed learning. It was my impression that Queen's was not as lecture-based as Western (this may not be true...this is why I am asking). I like the fact that it might not be as lecture intensive, so please correct me if I am wrong. The things I perceive to be downfalls of Queen's include the following: (1) the timing of clerkship electives, (2) no gross anatomy dissection (this may not be correct....again, please correct me if I am wrong), and (3) limited hospital facilities. Let me first address issue (1). I actually discussed this with my interviewers and was assured that this has no bearing on whether or not students are successful in the CARMS match, and that Queen's students are as competitive as students from any of the other universities. I was also told that Queen's students spend more time preparing for clerkship than students from other schools - the net effect being that the student becomes a more active and competent participant in the patient care team once they actually begin clerkship. Please be brutally honest with me (even if you might prefer UWO over Queens)! I can see how greater preparation could be advantageous, but my instinct keeps telling me that NOT having completed clerkship electives before the match has to have some negative consequence. It just makes intuitive sense to me that completing electives in an area before applying for a residency in that area must prove to be an advantage in some way, and that NOT doing so must have some bearing on whether or not you are successful !?!? As for the gross anatomy issue, is this true? Do Queen's students learn from prosections rather than student dissection? To address (3), Kingston has limited hospital resources compared to London - does this place Queen's students at a disadvantage?

Let me now move to Western. My interview experience and my visit to Western was not the same as my experience at Queens. It wasn't terrible, but I didn't walk away with the same feeling I got from Queens. I really hadn't considered UWO as one of my top choices at any point in the application process until I started to learn more about it in preparation for my interview. Please don't take this as me being arrogant or unappreciative - I just really didn't know a whole lot about UWO until I researched in preparation for my interview. I see Western as having several advantages. First, as I discussed above, for some reason I have bought into the idea that completing clerkship electives before applying for the match HAS to have some bearing on whether or not you are successful in securing your residency of interest (especially if its a competitive specialty). Please tell me honestly, does this really have as much of an influence as people have said??? Second, I see the summer rural clinical work terms that are available to a few students per year as being very attractive. Third, London has a large hospital network that is viewed by many as "cutting edge". Is this what you have experienced. Would my clinical learning experience be strengthened by this. Lastly, is the fact that students perform their own dissections at UWO. As for disadvantages, I have really only found one: the lecture intensive curriculum. Is it MORE lecture oriented than Queens????

I appreciate any insight any of you can offer, especially those of you that attend either Queens or Western. Please don't take offence to what I have indicated as what I perceive to be weaknesses in your programs. If I didn't consider BOTH programs to be excellent programs, these questions and my dilemma would never have arisen. Also, I recognize that I might be wrong when it comes to certain things I have stated above. Again, that is why I am posting. I want to make sure I am properly informed before I make any decision. Please help me!

Thanks :)
