Housing Info in Saskatoon

Hey I just thought that I would start a post where we can discuss about all the housing choices in Saskatoon and ask any specific questions about living, commuting, entertainment in Sask!

Here is some basic info provided previously by Kosmo14 and Frenchfrog:

the best areas of town for a student:

Varsity view(the closest but may be expensive)

Greystone Heights

Grosvenor Park

Downtown

City Park

Nutana

Haultain

Holliston

Brevoort Park

College Park

Forest Grove

Sutherland

Q: How is commute across the bridges?

A: The commute across the bridges can be bad. During normal rush hour, it can take awhile (of course the term awhile is relative. At worse, it may take you 10 - 25 minutes to get across. The time, of course, varies depending on which bridge we are talking about, which direction you are going and whether there's an accident or construction.

Q: Is Lakeview a good area to live in?

A: Lakeview is a nice, safe neighbourhood. Lakeview may be a bit of a longer bike to the university. But, the bus is a great option if you live in Lakeview. The city's revised bus routes come into effect on July 2. They've added many more direct routes to the university area.Check out

http://www.saskatoon.ca/org/tran...rvices.asp for all the bus routes. I'm sure you can get to the university within a reasonable time.

Q: Is it realistically necessary to have a car?

A: A vehicle definitely isn't needed to get around.

It's really best and most convenient to live somewhere central in town (ex. downtown) if you dont have a car. If you live in the south east (Lakeview) end you may wish you had a car, again 'cause it's more convenient and easy with one. However, if you're open to biking, any end of town is realistically acheivable. My friend says you could bike across town in one hour and drive across it in 25 minutes. Again, the bus system was just revamped too.

Q: How are the neighbourhoods of wildwood and erindale like? It seems from reading previous posts that anything on the east side is good...is this true? Are there any areas in the east side that should be avoided?

Q: Are there any famous festivals, events in Saskatoon? What kind of entertainment facilities are there, and will we have time for entertainment at all?? :P

Thanks for any input,

Our house has an opening for next year. It is located east of the university on the edge of forest grove and sutherland. It is a nice 4 bedroom house with a double car garage and another of other nice features. I'm starting MED I in the fall and the other roommate of the house will be starting MED II. If anyone would like anymore information or pictures you can send me a personal message and I can send the file for the ad that we have posted.

P.S. Rent is $375 monthly with utilities included

Wildwood and erindale are safe neighbourhoods too. As far as I know, no area on the east side needs to be avoided. Of course, crime occurs unavoidably in every area of town, but typically the east and the north are the safer areas.

I don't know which Saskatoon events or festivals are famous, but Saskatoon has a long list of festivals and events that it hosts. Instead of listing them all here, I will direct you to this link:

www.tourismsaskatoon.com/section/section_1.html

I did notice that the Fringe festival was missing from this list. The Fringe is basically a festival that celebrates artists, so there's a bunch of short plays and comedy routines to buy tickets for, jewellery and artwork for sale and musicians/clowns/etc to go see on Broadway Avenue for free. (Sorry I couldnt explain that better).

As for entertainment facilities, Saskatoon has everything under the sun (except for an IMAX theater), there's theaters, bingo halls, a casino, racing (both horses and cars I think), movie cinemas, bars/dance clubs, a comedy club, skate parks, skating rinks, paintball, go-carting, mini-golf, bowling, swimming pools, arcades, pool halls, tennis courts, etc, etc.

I've probably missed a bunch. If you have anything specific in mind, you'll have to ask.

I've heard a few first year med students say that they have more free time during MedI than when they did in undergrad.

I sure hope that's true. Anyway, I do believe you have your afternoons off to do whatever you please (though, its supposed to be for studying and shadowing)...but there are rumours/jokes that certain people just spend the time golfing.

I have no way of proving this first hand, of course. Either way, the news is promising and you can't be working ALL the time.:D

Hey do you guys know how the apartments in Seeger-Wheeler are?? I'm actually starting undergrad at UofS in September and I have been offered a place in rez and was wondering if the rooms are clean and fairly quiet? I also got a single room in Voyageur Place but it's a lot pricier compared to Seeger-Wheeler. Just wondering if anyone had any experiences to draw from.

Hey HenryT,

I have never lived in residence, but from previous posts in the Sask forum and from friends' personal accounts of Seager-Wheeler : it's HELL. I'm thinking it all depends on your personality...can you handle sharing a kitchen and one bathroom with 5 or 6 other people? If you don't get along with one of those people, the year could be horrible. Plus, the distractions might be endless. What are the odds that ALL of your roomates settle down and study at the exact same time? Could be REALLY AWFUL

Maybe someone's heard differently?

Hey guys i'm looking at some condos right now in sask and I was wondering if anyone could let me know if Lakeview or Wildwood would be a better neighbourhood for condos. Specifically, if anyone knows at all, i am looking at pepper tree at tait court (wildwood) vs kingsmere blvd (lakeview).

Any comments much appreciated!

Both Tait and Kingsmere are decent areas. I think both are close to the new rapid transit stops which go to the UofS. Tait cres. is essentially a cres of all apartments/condos whereas Kingsmere is a mix of apartments and mid-higher range housing. Each is about a 8-15 min drive to the UofS depending on traffic.

Hope this helps.

Tait court is closer to Eighth Street (which has all the businesses on it) and to the Lakewood Civic Centre. So, if you don't have a vehicle, that proximity might be a bit more convenient. However, Kingsmere Blvd isn't THAT much further.
