Thanks so much guys!!! Honestly, this is a huge marathon and no matter what set-backs you face, just keep fighting and going after this and it'll eventually pay off. I've learned to really enjoy every single step of the way and make the most out of each new experience I've had. I remember getting my second MCAT score back and being so sad about it, but it all feels like a distant memory now. I'm so glad I didn't give up or stop trying! Trust me, if you want this bad enough you will find a way to make it work! And seriously, thanks to everyone out there who has been so supportive, it really helped me keep going when things got tough. This whole journey is not a race to get in ASAP, just continue to work hard and enjoy the (at times, very bumpy) ride!! Good luck to anyone still waiting, and WOOHOOO to everyone who's heard back so far! :)

congrats :)

Sure is a relief! For those with low MCATs, don't lose hope! I almost felt like giving up after I saw my MCAT score but you never know what's going to end up happening.

Sweet! Congrats! I knew they'd call ya back!

Thanks mlbn. I guess, for the time being, we are technically classmates? (UK your #1 out of the schools that accepted you so far?)

This acceptance is the best present for these upcoming holidays for me. Now if I could just get some Rosetta Stone software for Spanish, that would be a dream come true :) .

Congrats on UKY mlbn and GGG! It is a great school, and seemed like a great environment to learn in. If you guys need more info on the next steps, or other info on the school, PM me and I'll try to help you out. I held onto my UKY acceptance last year until mid-June, so I got a lot of emails and did a lot of prep research.

Hehe! We could possibly be!I've withdrawn from Wayne and EVMS, so I've got UK and SLU left.

Thanks Keith! I really liked UK too. There was such a homey feel to it. I went in not really expecting much, but I really enjoyed appreciated the way things were run there. There are a couple of things that concern me though. One is their board scores and match rates. I think I read something in SDN that a few years ago they had problems with too many ppl failing the boards or not doing so hot. Also, most of the schools that I've been too have a rough estimate of how they are doing compared to the national average. Most schools have said they're above it by a certain number of points, but the students I met at UK said they were just right on the average. I know I get obsessed with numbers , but I dont know, what do you think? Sure I guess it doesn't matter where you go, it's how much you study to do well on the boards, but still it must mean something if a school has people not doing so great. Is it because of the curriculum? Is it because of the profile of students they choose?

I'd love your take on this as well Keith.

ps: I agree mlbn. Homey is a good way to summarize the school's feel in one word.

Well lucky for you, UKY is undergoing its accreditation survey this school year. This will likely identify and weed out any weaknesses. Don't be shocked or afraid if the school goes under probation as that is what happens to many schools. I anticipate that'll happen for U of MB this year as we are doing the survey too. As well, if a weakness is found, the school will likely pump in more funding in that direction to make sure the accreditation passes.

In terms of matching and USMLE scores, I really am not sure how to react to the USMLE's as many schools brag that they are "above the average", yet it seems so few are below. Although with matching, likely the biggest problem if anything can be the USMLE scores. It is an unsaid (and really shouldn't be) rule, that matching success has large correlation to your USMLE score. That could be part of the school's problem, but could also be the students' problem. If I would take a stab at it, some schools in the US likely teach to the test. I've heard that is a common factor in high schools for the SAT, which with higher numbers = higher funding. For med schools, this could mean funding, and yes, reputation. I do believe that student effort probably does play a big role in this too, and that just may be a flaw with a larger proportion of the students there. There are enough USMLE prep books out there too that anyone, even IMG's should have a fair shot at getting a good mark (even if there is a learning gap in the curriculum from the USMLE tested material).

The advantage with UK is that the faculty is very close with the student body, and the student body itself is relatively small. This should allow you to get exceptional training, and very personal reference letters. Even for things such as gross anatomy, compare UKY to Jefferson and you'd see who has the better learning experience based on the number of students in the class who must dissect a comparable number of bodies.

Don't forget, new hospital! Could mean additional highly trained physicians coming in!

Many people at UKY are born and raised Kentucky w/ undergrad in Kentucky (seems to be a common prereq for the IS), and I would maybe take a guess to say that they haven't had much OOS experience before, and maybe don't stray far for electives either (which may hurt residency options). Although I've been in meds for only a short while, I've learned that part of getting into residency who you know!

Just some theories!

Thanks for all of the above Keith, all good things to consider moving forward :). The low number of students at UK combined with the homey feel definitely make it seem like an excellent place to become a highly trained doctor. mlbn, I do hope I am in your shoes when it comes time to decide between schools but I can see this as a blessing and a curse. So many things to consider when trying to decide where you will be happy and become the best physician/surgeon you can be.

Received SUNY Upstate rejection today. Case and Georgetown were over a month ago. Still in small pools at MCW, CMS/RFU and "May" status at VCU.
