med school books: How do you decide what to use in first year?

So I was browsing around, and some first year meds were asking which books are good. Is there no book list or required readings?

Many MD programs will provide a list of recommended or required textbooks for your courses. Also, medical students who have already completed your curriculum prior to you are a great resource for the texts that are strong as well as not so strong.

We were provided with a booklist but it was really up to us which books we wanted to buy (if we wanted to buy any at all). Often, there are several books that do the same job so it becomes difficult deciding which one to buy.

There's pros and cons to each book too. But generally, asking upper years is a good idea because they've already determined where your biggest bang for your buck is.
