Medical school space is up again at Western

The University of Western Ontario is welcoming its largest-ever first-year medical class next week and one-third of the students are home-grown.

A total of 75 men and 72 women will start their medical studies at the Schulich School of Medicine and Dentistry, an increase of eight over last year.

In 1999, the school had only 96 students.

The students, who will graduate in 2011, will be officially welcomed at what is called the white coat ceremony Wednesday when they'll be given an inaugural white laboratory coat and be asked to recite the Hippocratic Oath.

Associate dean of admissions Francis Chan said the school has been steadily increasing its enrolment for several years as part of the provincial plan to ease Ontario's serious doctor shortage.

By drawing a large portion of its medical students from the area, it's hoped many will eventually set up their practices here, Chan said.

"That's the strategy. If people have their roots in a region they are likely to return to that region," he said.

Western received 2,300 applicants for the medical school positions and interviewed 445. Out of the 147 accepted, 51 students came from Western, 28 from McMaster, 19 from Toronto and seven from Queen's.

"It's the highest proportion we have had coming from Western," Chan said.

To be accepted, students have to have a minimum average of 80 per cent in their two previous years of study.

All must have already earned a four-year honours degree, Chan said.

The youngest student accepted was born in 1987 while the oldest was born in 1972. Two of the students are aboriginals.
