Any Questions about US Dental Schools?

I got a question

All the US Dental schools list a full year of physics with labs as a prerequisite. My problem is that I took the two introductory physics courses here at U of C that are the standard ones for pre-med and pre-dent that everyone here takes. However, the first course didn't have a laboratory but had tutorials instead. How would this work for US schools? Would this qualify for physics requirement or do I still need to take 1 more physics with a lab because I really would rather not

You gotta contact the schools. Just e-mail them up. Do it now so that in case you have to take a course, you can do it this winter. I'm guessing its not a big deal because you've already taken some physics lab.

  • 5 months later...

bumping a 5 month old thread..

I just finished 2nd year (2/4) as a dental hygiene student from UBC

few questions:

would doing undergrad in hygiene and then getting few years of work exp before apply help me " stand out"?

does anyone know if american canadian-friendly schools take college marks for their pre-reqs?

also, did any work part-time during their DMD/DDS degree?

I'm wondering how hard it will be to temp as a dental hygienist once a week while going to d school full-time. (Getting proper paperwork to work etc).

Hi guys,

First of all thanks for this thread, it was exactly what I was looking for.

The first posts that address this are a bit outdated and I was wondering

if a Canadian applicant should apply during 4th year (this means they would only get my 1,2 and 3 year grades right?) with a cGPA of 3.5. I haven't written the Dat yet but let's assume I'd have an average or above average score.

Obviously my gpa is not very strong but I do have a strong upward trend with a 3.9 in the final year.

What do you guys think?

Hi!! So what's the process of a canadian dental graduate working in U.S? Do they have to write board exams?

And,, does anyone know what the process is like for a canadian dental graduate working in Europe??

thanks alot!

I would like to ask a question similar to this. If I were to go to Dentistry school in the states, how would I go about coming back up here? Someone told me that the US and Canada are 'borderless' in terms of dental practice (thus, American dentists can practice here and Canadian Dentists can practice there). However, if I were to go to school in the States, would I have to write the Canadian Boards? If I chose to do a residency in the states, would I have to write a version of that specialty's Canadian Board before I could practice?

Yes. You have to write the Canadian Board. It's a two days exam, not a big deal really.

After specialty training, you need to take the Specialty Royal College Examination in order to advertise/work as a specialist in Canada. This is different than in the US where such an exam is not mandatory. However, some people take it to be called a "Board Certified Specialist".

My cGPA is 4.21 on AADSAS scale and sGPA is 4.19. I took Canadian DAT and score is AA:20, Bio:21, Chem:20, RC:19,TS:20, PAT:15, Carving:8. I am taking American DAT on 30th June and I am sure I will do much better. I have 70 hrs shadowing experience and no other ECs. I have finally decided to apply to the following schools-

1. Pacific

2. Nova

3. Indiana University

4. University of Michigan

5. University of Detroit

6. Columbia

7. Case

8. UPenn

9. Marquette

10.University of Louisville

11.Harvard

I know BU, NYU, Tufts and Temple are Canadian friendly but I have been advised not to apply there with high GPA. I want to join a school that can provide me very good clinical training and I am not interested in Research. I also want to do specialization after DDS so I want to join a school where I should have good chances to go for specialization. Is the list given above good or if anyone can provide any input to change or delete or add any choice?

Also I am wondering if I should send my Canadian DAT score or not? I am thinking if I send the score it will complete my application on the very first day but then I am thinking how my PAT and Carving score will effect. Is it better to send the Canadian score alongwith the application on 1st of June and then send American DAT score after 30th (I am not sure if schools will look at my later sent score or not) or should I wait till 30th to send the score and just send American one.

Any input will be highly appreciated.

Hello,

I'm assuming you are not interested in Canadian schools?? You should get in easily with those marks. I would remove Columbia, I've only heard bad things at all the interviews that I went to and they loose everything that you send them. You should consider adding the University of Maryland, they have an excellent clinical program and they accepted me (I'm Canadian).

Thanks a lot and congratulations on your acceptance at one of the topmost school in America. I heard from someone that University of Maryland is better if you are research oriented. And I will definitely apply if its more of clinical. Thanks for letting me know.

Canadian schools are my first choice. I am just increasing my chances to be in next year.

Does anyone know why some of the US schools ask for you to send them a 2x2 photo of yourself? If it's optional, should I send them one anyway?

at a lot of american schools, after your interview (like maybe a week or two) they present your file to the admissions committee which will consist of your interviewers, and others on the committee (perhaps dean of admissions, dean of faculty, and other interviewers). So sometimes the interviewers have to have a picture in front of them to remember who you were. If they are presented with only a name they may not remember which person you were. The picture is NOT used for racial profiling or accepting only good looking people.

Can anyone guide me when we are entering our coursework, they ask for term, term type and year what do we need to fill in? For term they have given options like Fall, Spring, Summer 1, Summer 2, Winter, Interim. I am at UWO and I think most of Canadian Universities (atleast Ontario ones) like UWO have yearly session. Like for year 2008 we indicate 2008 Fall/Winter but there is no option like that. Also for Term Type they have given options Semester, Quarter, Trimester, Unit but we are yearly here so what should we choose? And if we are filling 2008 year do we need to select 2008 or 2009 as that year courses finish in 2009. Please anyone who has been through the process guide me asap.

I was also wondering the same thing, I am a first time Canadian applicant & am having the same issues as KittyP. Is it worth calling AADSAS customer service?

I will try calling them tomorrow morning. If you get answer first please post it otherwise I will post it. Also, do anyone knows if we need to write down courses we are taking in coming year starting in Sep. I am going in fourth year and have written courses I am taking now in Summer but not sure about writing the coming year's courses.

I already have my schedule planned out for my 4th year, so I wrote those courses down in the "Planned/In Progress" section. Remember, you will have a chance to update this section during the "Academic Update" period.

And in regards to your other question about the yearly thing...I go to the U of A so I don't have that problem. I just put Fall 2008, Winter 2009, etc.

Thanks for reply. Do you have your courses planned by yourself or you have already enrolled in them? Even I have some idea what I am going to take but I am worried it wont show up on my transcripts as I haven't enrolled into them.

I already enrolled in them, but I don't think they will show up on the transcript until I pay the deposit fee in Aug/Sept.

Thanks. Do you think we will be able to make any changes during the update period in November? I know most of the courses I am going to take but haven't enrolled yet and if any discrepancy occurs will it be possible to change?

I'm sure you can. If not, AADSAS will probably contact you or something. I think the most important thing about the "Planned/In progress" courses is that you have all the prereqs done either in that semester or in previous years. And the schools that you apply to will probably decide whether or not to interview you in like sept, especially if you apply in june. That;s just a guess though..
