Any Questions about US Dental Schools?

Recommended Posts

what made you choose Temple over all other schools? I know it's a fantastic "clinical" school, but for instance, Columbia is more known for sending out its graduates to specialities.

False False False.........its a very pre-dental mentality so I dont blame you. When I was choosing dental schools, I was debating between Columbia and Temple. In the end I choose Temple, because it was cheaper and its clinical is by far superior and Im so glad I did.

Ivy League schools dont make students specialists.........students make themselves specialists. Its just that more students from Ivy League schools apply to specialize...thats all.

My class has enjoyed 100% match rate so far to ortho, endo and perio.......we'll have to wait until Jan.28 for oral surgery and pedo.

As far as reputation goes.....patients dont care where you went to school. Patients only care about 3 questions when at the dentist:

How much is this gonna cost?

How long is it gonna take?

Is it gonna hurt?

Thats all..........if you were going into Law or an MBA......then yes, school reputation matters........for dental schools it doesnt.

Honestly, I think going to a "lesser known" schools gives you a better shot at standing out, which is all that matters when applying to specialities.

For example, for pedo, we have 6 people applying from my school..........at Penn, there are 25 people applying to pedo alone!!!!!! So tell me, is it easier to stand out with 6 people or 25?

Also, just say that all 6 of my class gets in and 15 people from Penn get in. On paper, thats pretty impressive for Penn, right? But just remember, that EVERYONE from my class got in, and 10 people from Penn DIDNT get in ;)

See how statistics can be decieving sometimes?

Me and my classmates all got interviews at very prestigous specialty programs and not once did my school name come up in interviews......it was all about my personal CV that was talked about. Remember, program directors come from all different schools as well.....so they know it doesnt matter at all.

Good luck with Paedo, odds from previous 2 years is about 1 in 5, OMS is 1 in 8 for the MATCH program. so if you've got 5 interview for paedo, you will likely be in, unless you really bombed all the interview.

Good luck with screaming kids :D oh wait, restrain and versed or GA ;) Just kidding. ketamine works the best as far as i have seen.

Paedo is lots of fun, good luck on your Match in about 1 month time

Hey everyone,

Two questions for you.. I was wondering - what exactly is the "Science GPA" that american schools seem to look at? Is it just every science course that you've ever taken, or is it the prerequisite science courses?

Furthermore, if it IS every science course that you have ever taken, then are courses that aren't traditional "science" courses, but that are FROM the faculty of science (i.e. calculus, astronomy) included in the Science GPA?

Secondly, if I am planning on doing my English credit this summer and applying to American schools in June (of this summer), since English is a prerequisite course for pretty much every school, can I apply in June while still doing the English course and then send them my grade when I am done the course? Or do I have to wait until the end of the course (i.e. end of June or July) before I can apply?

Thanks! :)

It includes every science course you've taken at a university/college setting. This is copy/pasted from the AADSAS website:

Neuroscience

Pathology

Pharmacology

Pharmacy

Physics

Physiology

Zoology

Agriculture

Animal Sciences

Astronomy

Clinical Sciences

Nutrition

Engineering

Health Technology

Geology

Kinesiology

Mathematics

Physical Sciences

Plant Sciences

Sports Sciences

Non-Science Courses (Humanities, Social Sciences, Health Services and miscellaneous courses)

Examples: Anthropology

Art

Behavioral Sciences

Business

Communications

Dental Hygiene

Economics

Education

English

Foreign Languages

Forensic Sciences

History

Humanities

Music

Physical Education

Political Science

Psychology

Public Affairs/Administration

Good question......At my school, all prereqs should be done before applying....but exceptions can always be made.....i would contact the school's admissions director at the schools your interested in with this question.

Thanks!!! I got 5 interviews, so I know the odds are with me.....Im pretty confident on a couple of programs cause the directors basically told me when I left that I hope I rank them #1......however, my true #1 choice is at a very prestigous program that only accepts 2 residents, so im kinda nervous cause Im sure many people are going to rank them #1.......

ANd you're right....pedo is the BEST!!! They say its the next ortho. I already got a job offer in Hawaii (I wanna live there for a couple of years before I move back to Toronto) paying a BASE salary of 250K working 4 days a week including full benefits!!!!!

I plan on working in a community clinic 1.5 days a week, so I can get a balance and give back to the less fortunate.......but can you believe I can make that much money, still be able to work with the poor AND act like an immature fool with kids all day!?!??! I LOVE this profession.........thats why I hope people dont give up cause they cant get into Canadian schools.....with our dollar so strong, going to US schools is a great alternative!!!! :)

Great thread, provides a lot of assistance to those Canadians wishing to apply to US dental schools...

My question:

Regarding my undergrad marks in Honor Biology @ UWO:

1st year, 70% ... 2nd year 75% .....3rd year 86... 4th year = should be 85-86%

(overall GPA ~ 3.3ish)

I am hoping that a council will recognize the extreme upwards trend here, in the last two years (when i relaized I wanted to apply)

I am considering doing a masters program and apply during these 2 years of masters because I am afraid my overall GPA will be overlooked as it is rather low.. Or doing a 5th year at UWO and then applying to Ontario school which consider best 2 years

I am writing the DAT Feb 16th, hoping for 17-19s ...

What is your opinion/input/thoughts???

Also I want to apply EARLY in the rolling admissions this MAY ... which preparations should I be making regarding the online process?? (other than having all my LORs and such ..) Im asking more about the process and registering with the website and such for online process?

You should with a GPA around 3.3ish you should be ok if you apply early but as for the DAT, you really should aim to be in the 20s to be really competitive. I applied this cycle and it seems to be getting quite competitive this year. Check out predents.com for a slightly skewed sample of this years applicants for the schools which you are interested in. You can even consider starting an application for this cycle but don't submit (doesn't cost you anything!) and completing/saving a copy so that you have pretty much have everything ready to go for early may when the next cycle begins. Just remember that if you do start a masters, which will look good but you are contractually required to complete your masters if you are accepted

Good luck!

I know that you'll likely get an interview at 2 schools: BU or NYU

Other than that, good luck!

btw, I am making a database for Pre-Dental Students based on PreDents.com so just wait and I'll give you cool results.

As of right now, I'm relaxin' hangin' out with a couple of guys that were up to no good.... yeah you know the rest.

Your gpa is fine for schools like BU, NYU, USC, UoP and even Columbia. However, those DAT scores will not make the cut. BU has one of the highest DAT avgs (currently # 12 out of 56 dental schools), and NYU is around mid 30's I think.

I suggest you retake your dat and hit scores of 20+ in all sections, and then apply in May. You can make it to some good schools. DAT scores are starting to play a much more important role in admissions.

Hey Dr BadVibes, is it possible if you can post a list of all your extracurricular/shadowing experiences you have done? I'm attending my first year of university and i just wanted to see what most dental students did besides working hard to achieve that super gpa in their undergrad years. Thank you =)

Hello,

I am planning on applying to the States this summer (do applications open in May/June/July btw, I keep finding contradictory information).

I wrote the Canadian DAT in November and am thinking of writing the American DAT as well.

My first question is, can I apply in May or June and submit my Canadian DAT scores and then have my American DAT scores forwarded later, after I have submitted my application? Or can I supply no scores and have my American DAT scores fowarded as of July, even if I apply earlier?

My second question is that do American schools look at your most recent DAT or your best DAT? Also, does writing the American DAT automatically trump my Canadian DAT scores - regardless of most recent or best scores?

Thanks very much,

I personally would stay away from the US DAT if possible. Only write the American one if you did poorly on the Canadian one. I believe that they look at the most recent one since you can only take the US DAT 3 times at the most.

The application process starts some time around mid May. My suggestion to you would be to not delay and start preparing now. Gather your reference letters and in fact, since its free to open an application, start one now so that you have an idea of what needs to be filled out when the new application cycle starts in May. Good Luck!

Hey everyone.....sorry i havent been online lately......i was seriously freaking out about residency match day.....but I ended up matching at UCLA for pedo!!!

Its really a dream come true......I was always an average student from Canada.....never had strong grades.....somehow got accepted to dental school and now Im gonna be paid to be trained as a specialist at one of the best schools in the world in sunny Los Angeles!?!?! Seriously, im on cloud 9 here. And this program only accepted 2 residents in the entire country and one of them is Canadian.....spreading that Canadian love baby!!!

And honestly, a lot of it had to do with the fact that I went to a US dental school and was able to make some serious connections, which I believe ultimately put me over the top!

hopefully my success will show people out there that they should never give up, because if a guy like me can achieve all of this, then any of you can as well. :)

alright, so back to your questions (thanks to microserf for also answering questions....always great to get multiple opinions)

like the previous posters said, you're dat scores are too low......that 16 alone in biology wouldnt get you an interview at my school....retake it

well first of all, I didnt acheive the "super gpa"....heheheh.....honestly, during my UofT days, I spent most of my time travelling the world.....

sure, I had the predental club, shadowing at dental offices, etc.....but honestly, everyone has that on their application........during my interviews, my travelling experiences were talked about the most.....dont think that what adcoms are interested in are necessarily dental/health related activities
