Increase in residency spots

Recommended Posts

Yeah, but one would hope that they would increase specialty positions too. Things might start to get highly competitive.

hehehe as opposed to the situation right now :)

There is a lot of political pressure on getting more family doctors. I suspect they will focus there

Id guess the increase is going to be skewed heavily towards family medicine. A completely political move.

Yes, this is what I was worried about. I was just wondering if there was anyone who has computed how residency spots have increased in the past few years in specialty vs. family and knows how they are projected to increase in the future (and I do realize that family doesn't fill anyway, so maybe residency spots didn't increase at all?). I guess I could find all of this out by going to the Carms website.... but maybe someone knew off the top of their head.

Okay, so here's the percent of family med positions in the following years (for all canadian med schools):

2008: http://www.carms.ca/pdfs/2008R1_MatchResults/4Registration%20and%20Quota%20by%20Medical%20School_en.pdf

40.4%

2007: http://www.carms.ca/pdfs/2007MatchResults/Registration_and_Quota_by_Medical_School_en.pdf

39.1 %

2006: http://www.carms.ca/eng/operations_R1reports_06_e.shtml#table4

39%

2005: http://www.carms.ca/eng/operations_R1reports_05_e.shtml#table14

39%

2004: http://www.carms.ca/eng/operations_R1reports_04_e.shtml#table14

38%

So, on the overall, pretty constant with a tendency to increase.

So... with the great increase of med students over the next 2 years (added to those from the past couple of years), have residency spots correspondingly increased/increasing? I mean across the board, not just in family practice.

Don't forget that AB, MB, and QC have also now opened up round 1 of CaRMS to IMGs.

Don't forget that AB, MB, and ON (may be incorrect on the last one) have also now opened up round 2 of CaRMS to IMGs.

Round 2 has always been open to IMGs. I think you mean round 1. There are reserved spots for IMGs though, so they don't directly compete with CMGs for spots in round 1.

Round 1, my mistake. However, in AB, MB and QC IMGs match in the same pool as CMGs.
