I am currently on the waiting list at UofT. However, I have been accepted to medical school at the University of Cambridge (UK). Unfortunately, I need to give Cambridge a firm reply within the next 3 weeks as to whether I intend to accept their offer or reject it. As you can guess...this is quite a dilemma to be in. I know that if I do go to Cambridge, it will be next to impossible for me to get back to Canada and do my residency or to get my license to practice. I do know that my ultimate goal is to be able to practice in North America...if not Canada then the U.S. I was wondering if anyone has any info as to the success of British graduates gaining residency spots in the U.S. or even Canada. Please advise me of what I should do.

Here's a few posts that I have pruned elsewhere:
Quote:
Champ, what is your opinion?

Since you have studied in England, I was wondering what your opinion is on the medical schools there is England. I have recently been accepted to medical school by Cambridge and am currently on the waiting list at UofT. So....I am debating as to what I should do. Do you happen to have any info on the success of British graduates gaining residency spots in the U.S. and Canada?

Interesting Predicament. I am in a similar one. I have been offered a position at both U of T and U of Oxford. There are pros and cons and it think it depends on the individual. First, the costs, without UK citizenship, the costs are prohibitive (~40,000 cdn/ year) + living. Second, their are 3 types of med programs, 1) 4-yr (known as fast track@ Cambridge, Oxford, Warick, St Georges) 2) a 5-yr (graduate entry course, at Oxford) 3) 6-yr, standard entry for high schoolers. I am guessing you have been offered a spot on a fast track course. In terms of education, the Cambridge system is similar to that of Oxford, which is more private (~2-4 people) tutorials than mass lectures. Based on my understanding, the qualification process for a specialty is longer by a few years here in the UK. Once you are a qualified doctor, you have to do 1 yr house jobs + 2 years more....and then you can specialise for another 4 years. In terms of coming back to N. America, I know that at the moment it is difficult to go to Canada with a UK degree but not sure of the US regulations.

On balance, I will likely chose Toronto, but it is not an easy choice. If I were in your shoes, I would accept Cambridge (but school wont start till October) and by that time you will know about UT well before and can withdraw from Cambridge. If UT does not pull through, your worst case scenario is a medical degree from one of the best medical schools in the world (Cambridge).

Hope this helps,

Let me know if you need any further info.

Since you finish a Bachelor already in N. America, do you still need to start from the beginning in England?

Thanks for the info Champ and Thewonderer. I am on the accelerated program at Cambridge (so I don't need to start from the beginning). Unfortunately, I don't have the luxury of waiting till October to find out what will happen with UofT. I need to let UCAS know by the 1st of July if I am going to accept or reject. Apart from the cost, I would love to study at Cambridge....I fell in love with the place when I went there in December. By the way Champ...I might have met you at the Oxford interviews for the accelerated course in Medicine. I interviewed at St. Peters.
