value of presenting at a conference

Hello!

I'm in first year med and a research project that I was working on before med school just got accepted for poster presentation at a conference. I would really like to go but the trip is going to cost me at least 500 dollars to go for 1-2 days. I'm in a tight budget situation now so the cost factor is huge.

I just wanted to get some insight from you guys about whether presenting at a conference is looked at favorably or if it's just another thing ppl write on their resumes.

Thanks!

Presenting at a conference is a significant point in your favour if you apply to a program that likes research interest in its applicants. It shows that you had the commitment to see a project through and that it had high enough quality to be accepted for presentation. An oral presentation is better than a poster, but I would still suggest going for the presentation. How huge is the cost factor? Are you really going to notice $500 extra on your LOC by the end of med school?
