vvelieva
Thought it was funny.... I guess normal for someone who studies a lot and is committed to his work, but some think it's a disorder.

Dino
Funny! BTW, what do you think the diagnosis is? I would say schizoid, because he doesn't seem to interact much with his peers and doesn't tust them. He bas sublimates by working hard and being meticulous. The testers probably mention the quasi-obsessive work habits to trick the test takers into thinking the subject ellicits obsessive-compulsive traits. NLengr
OCPD. You see medical student, you automatically look for OCPD. Other golden stereotypes you see in questions (don't even finish reading the question, just skip to the end and look for the associated word, which will be correct): Black = Sickle Cell Mediterranean = Thalassemia Middle Eastern = G6PD Defeciancy Stepfather = Child Abuse Thats how I passed medical school. Dino
It's obsessive compulsive. He has a girlfriend which goes against schizoid. Many people with SPD have girlfriends/boyfriends. Even more are sexually active. Being meticullous and having attention to detail doesn't mean one has OCD. He clearly keeps busy with solitary activities to avoid being with other people. No repetitive behaviour or signs of obsession are actually mentioned. He does a variety of tasks and doesn't seem to be obsessed by a single group of them. No mention of him going over them again and again. He also probably want to excell in school. The significant issue is the time spent alone, away from everyone, including his "girlfriend". Many workaholics are so because they want to avoid other people, even their families. Read it again. Except for the social avoidance, I would agree with the F answer. Dino
Okay. First, sorry, I don't have a DSM-IV-TR with me. I'm on vacation at an undisclosed location. So he may show signs of criteria 3 and 6. But the DSM is just a set of "pointers". You have to look at the whole picture. (sorry, I don't have a DSM-IV-TR with me. I'm on vacation at an undisclosed location). I fit more criteria than he does. P.S.: You may want to re-read my last post. I was editing it while you were posting. apache
that's good, you should never have a dsm with you, they're useless and can be condensed down to 10 pages (i've read the whole thing, some of the "disorders" are just asinine... the "answer" is c, disorders are social constructs, and as such, especially in psychiatry, you have to validate your bull**** diagnoses with "and is significantly interfering with the patients function and relationships with others etc." if you call this obsessive compulsive personality disorder i could say that just about any person with strong religious beliefs (of the big three monotheistic) has obsessive compulsive personality disorder. if the person is content and happy, as is his girlfriend, then there's no "disorder". Okay. First, sorry, I don't have a DSM-IV-TR with me. I'm on vacation at an undisclosed location. So he may show signs of criteria 3 and 6. But the DSM is just a set of "pointers". thebouque
Accidentally deleted my last post so here are the criteria for OC personality disorder. Maybe he doesn't meet the right number of criteria so he might not have the disorder, only traits. Muse: I 'm not sure that being egodystonic is necessary in order to have a personality disorder. 1) is preoccupied with details, rules, lists, order, organization, or schedules to the extent that the major point of the activity is lost. 2) shows perfectionism that interferes with task completion (e.g., is unable to complete a project because his or her own overly strict standards are not met) 3) is excessively devoted to work and productivity to the exclusion of leisure activities and friendships (not accounted for by obvious economic necessity) 4) is overconscientious, scrupulous, and inflexible about matters of morality, ethics, or values (not accounted for by cultural or religious identification) 5) is unable to discard worn-out or worthless objects even when they have no sentimental value 6) is reluctant to delegate tasks or to work with others unless they submit to exactly his or her way of doing things 7) adopts a miserly spending style toward both self and others; money is viewed as something to be hoarded for future catastrophes 8) shows rigidity and stubbornness PS: Dino I reread your last post and I'm still not convinced. I don't think you're buying my theory either. So we can end it here?
