Reference Question for Jobs

Hello,

I'm applying for jobs right now and I'm wondering how important references are? I applied to a job in a hospital, they are asking me for references and I decided to give my 2 preceptors from 4th year hospital and community placement as references. Would it be a disadvantage to give a public health nurse as a reference for a hospital job? I'm having a hard time tracking down my instructors for the hospital from 3rd year.

The best indicator for your future performance is your past performance, so yes references are vital. Are you a new grad? If so they probably want references from people who you directly evaluated your work ethic and knowledge, i.e clinical instructors . I would only use references outside academia if clinical instructors can't be reached at all.
