uwbiotech
why do you say family or derm?
shikimate
Best in terms of what? Total revenue? Hours worked? Job availability? Easiness to get into? Physical demand of the job? Derm is the toughest to match into, but job availability is great. Total revenue is not necessarily at the top.
Bambi
Without context of where you are coming from, where you want to go, the question is meaningless.

LeBronto2019
Regardless of the context, family med! Maybe not for ridiculously excessive salary but still solid relative to the rest of the world

mononoke
Rad onc obv Why? The job market isn't great for this specialty I'd probably say in no particular order: 1. Family (flexibility, job market great, income based on how you structure your practice, short training) 2. physiatry (one of the hidden 'gems', lifestyle) 3. derm (jobs, good income) 4. anesthesia (covers many areas, intellectually challenging, colleagues easy to work with)
WomboCombo
Mononoke, I agree and I would add psych too. PM&R was pretty competitive this year and this may be a trend? Derm is something that is pretty hard to bank on haha. Anaes has a tough job market according to another thread comparing anaes to IM subspecs

Eh.
ChemPetE
The job market seems to be average or worst in all the specialties right now so at this point, is it even something to consider when choosing a speciality? Eh. True that. Actually for people going into rad onc currently the projections show equivalence by 2019 for new grads to new positions across Canada. Probably not looking at expanding program numbers this year, but in the next couple of years to meet expected demand. We're on the upswing, which has shown in the availability of new positions over the past couple of years. And definitely it's not the worst specialty when considering jobs; the majority of grads are finding employment after a fellowship. Jobs aside, it's got a great mix of lifestyle, clinical medicine (communication + procedure based), problem solving, and remuneration. Definitely not for everyone but for those that choose to do it it's pretty amazing.
