senotspets
Hey guys. My friend who got an invite for Ottawa said that this was in the interview package. "Appendix "C": The Interview. Interview of candidates is by invitation only. The invitation is based on the excellence of the academic record, according to parameters defined by the Admissions Committee, combined with the results of the CASPer test. The invitation for interview does not guarantee admission. " I was searching on the Ottawa website to confirm this, but it wasn't specified if EC's were used for pre-interview as well or post-interview only. I thought there was a consensus that EC's were important pre-interview. Thoughts?

Sincere
Ya, it said the same thing for me. Apparently, during the interview, the panel only has a copies of your ECs and nothing else. So, I guess that's when they come in.
dancex123
I think they do look at ECs pre-interview but that the casper+gpa make up the "academic excellence" part. whereas before casper, it was JUST gpa +ecs i could be wrong though
EthicsForBreakfast
If this is anything like veterinary medicine interviews (which are panel-style as well), they will use your extracurriculars to simply guide the conversation and pick specific questions to ask you. Donald_Duck
The calculation is 50% cGPA, 50% Casper score. As EthicsForBreakfast mentioned, they will use the EC to guide conversation. Of course, use your ECs as proof of your accomplishments/traits, to impress the panelists, and to show your qualities and dedication. spacebar123
@Duck are you speculating this or do you know that as a fact?
Donald_Duck
The fact that they do not consider ECs for interview invites is a 100% fact. The split 50/50 between GPA and Casper has been confirmed to me by many reputable sources however I would keep them at an odds of 99% as I do not know if the new dean of admissions had played with the ratio when she took office (she started in mid December I believe). Sincere
I find the 50/50 split hard to believe when the GPAs are this incredibly high. Either that or the spread between Casper scores is so small that it doesn't make a difference. They could have taken the highest GPAs on one end and the highest Casper scores on the other, and the ones that between the two were the highests took those 575 spots? Donald_Duck
Given that you people are starting to doubt the duck again, I will be a bit more specific. Every year the committee establishes a certain cutoff for both GPAs and Casper scores depending on the performance of the group. This could for example represent the top 30% of applicants (be in 70% percentile for Casper, and a GPA of 3.92 for example). After having met the cutoff, they will weigh your GPA 50% and your Casper score 50%. Hope that clarifies, Mr Duck
medgoals33
What is the breakdown of evaluation applicants after the interview? Is it 50/50 using interview/academic excellence score?
Donald_Duck
Based on previous years, the interview score is on 4, and it will be combined with your GPA on 4.0 scale to give a total number on 8. Given that all applicants have above 3.8 GPAs, the only real discriminatory factor is the interview score (then, if you score the same, the higher GPA gets invited). From previous years, this score is either a 3.5 or a 4/4 interview score. This is the method used a couple of years ago, and could have been changed. However, the Casper means nothing after you receive an interview, and your CV is simply to guide conversation and act as proof of accomplishment, hence I would not be surprised if they still use the method I described above. liveyourdream
Thanks again Mr Duck for your insight on the admission process. What are your thoughts on the 3 reference letters ? Mr Trout
Donald_Duck
Reference letters are only used as red flags and are not graded in any way. Mr Duck
AAAmeds
Mr Duck, do you know how the interview is graded? Do they a specific criteria (and if so, based on what) or do they grade you based on the impression that they get from you?

Donald_Duck
I do not know exactly how the interview is graded (I am a candidate after all) but try your best to be yourself, and reason with everything. They want to be able to see that you would be someone they can vision as their colleagues, as a student of their own, or as a friend. If you come off as fake, they won't know what to think of you. And of course, try to stay calm and collected.
