johnstickienote
Hi all, I am not particularly interested in dermatology, but I am interested in Internal Medicine. I am wondering if anybody might be able to help clear up how matching to a derm residency works... is it 3 years of IM and then a subspecialty match to dermatology, or do you match to derm right out of an MD? ellorie
Derm is an entry level discipline in Canada, so straight out of MD.
shikimate
To add in the US many derm are second entry, which means people do 1 preliminary year and start derm at R2. Exactly how it works with NRMP I'm not sure. I think people apply to both derm and a prelim year at the same time; you may want to check this if you are interested. JJ1985
You apply to dermatology during your 4th year med school CaRMS applications. It is not a subspecialty within internal medicine (it used to be... a long time ago). For derm in Canada we do a full year of internal medicine during R1 as our off-service year, it is comparable to the off-service year that was mentioned in the US. US programs are total of 4 years, Canada is 5 years
