boodog
can anybody tell me more about psychiatric practise/residency.... from what i've seen from shadowing the practices are very different from person to person. does residency gear you towards limiting your practise to one particular condition? also where are some of the better academic psych residencies, and are they competitive to get into? Satsuma
Psychiatry is one of the few specialties where you can really tailor your practice to what interests you...eating disorders, borderline personality disorders, schizophrenia, addiction etc. But in residency you will be trained broadly. Psychiatry in general is not a competitive specialty to match to. Check out the carms.ca site for previous stats.
ELA
Psych is also one of those specialties that gives you a good balance between inpatient, outpatient and Emerg settings. You can choose to restrict your practice in one of those areas or do which ever combination suits you best. Psych is usually not too competitive, although this year our class alone had about 10 serious applicants. I'm not sure if this trend is going to continue into subsequent years though.
