littledoctor
Hi all, Would any of you like to share your knowledge on what sort of practice to expect as a pediatrician? (residency and beyond) Residents all tell me that peds is much more demanding than family med in terms of time... Not lazy! but I want to be a good mommy... A-Stark
I think it varies entirely on the type of practice, peds being a lot less variable than family med.
estairella
Both can be quite variable. If you want to do community pediatrics only, it's pretty much like being a typical family doctor. If you want to do some hospital work as well, it's like a family doctor that picks up ER shifts (or works a busy walk-in, or does low-risk obstetrics, etc.) If you want to be a NICU-specialized pediatrician, prepare to surrender your life over to tiny babies (and no, notyour own ). You can do both fields with some, alot of, or no call and that is a big determinant of how much you work (but also a determinant of your earnings). Do not go into paeds - less job market later on - people simply do not want to have kids, and by the way, it seems that a lot of kids tehse days are getting treated at their family physician anyway!
