Money, Prestige, and Lifestyle

Recommended Posts

You cannot have both prestige and lifestyle (unless of course you become famous in your field).

The reason: Prestige in the public's eye is a direct RESULT of how "severe" the medical situation is...

A neurosurgeon has prestige, but that is BECAUSE he's called at night to get his ass to the hospital and save someone's life.

A dermatologist has zero prestige, largely because they almost never deal with high-pressure situations or overnight call.

Hope that explains it!

pres·tige/presˈtēZH/

Noun:

1) Respect and admiration felt for someone or something on the basis of their achievements or quality.

2) Denoting something that arouses such respect or admiration.

Teenager with social-life ruining skin condition. You the dermatologist fix it. Activate feelings of respect and admiration. Collect exorbitant OHIP payment. Go home at 4pm in your Black BMW 750Li. Have wild sex with your partner.

Prestige and lifestyle. Done.

I dont know why this thread still exists let alone 27 pages later. But huzzah to whoever made it :P

huh? I'd say EM doctors deal with severe situations and work in high pressure situations and people don't seem to view them as prestigious. Most people I talk to think EM specialists are family doctors (no offence to the family docs)

i remember doing some consult psych on the neurosurg unit and the guys were on 1 in 2 call, unofficially. i really respect neurosurgeons, neurosurg and er are apples and oranges in terms of how much of yourself you devote yourself to medicine
