tooty
I've met some PGY-2 radiology residents who called themselves R2; but some called themselves R1 because they started radiology in second year of residency. Which is more common?
Lactic Folly
Probably institution specific. Here, residents go by PGY year - the R designation is not used.
justletmein
In most places, PGY-2 = R2 It is understood that most R1 years are off-service...
rmorelan
In most places, PGY-2 = R2It is understood that most R1 years are off-service... never heard it defined any other way but it wouldn't surprise me if some place had their own variation etc. Always heard of the last years as R5s or PGY-5s. thebouque
In radiology R1 = PGY 2 In pathology however R1 = PGY 1. That's just how life is, unfair isn't it?
tooty
In radiology R1 = PGY 2 not everywhere. R1 = PGY1 in other places.
rmorelan
not everywhere. R1 = PGY1 in other places. I still never heard anything other than R1 = PGY1 before someone mentioned it here. Haven't been everywhere of course but at the very least there is a mix in terms of description out there.
ellorie
This is just idle speculation, but is there any chance that at some programs it stands for Resident-1 and at others it stands for Radiology-1?
CW VW
In the US they talk about R1 as being your first year of radiology training (i.e. your second post grad year or PGY2). So when you write the ACR exam or go to AFIP, the choices will be R1 - R4 (no R5) which correspond with PGY2 - PGY5 years. It is a bit confusing and I know residents from Canada have checked the wrong box and been lumped in the wrong group before because most places here in Canada seem to consider R-n and PGY-n to be interchangeable.
