sunshade3
Whats the employment outlook for ENT? Is a fellowship usually necessary to find a job? Can you find one in a relatively urban place with fellowship these days? I'm also wondering about the hours for ENT during residency..
Wut?
Employment for ENT is much like many of the other surgical specialties - it's still possible, but not easy to find a job. Many, if not all graduates, need to have a fellowship to find a job - as far as I've heard from my colleagues, this is starting to be the case even so in mid-sized non-academic centers. Hours vary by program - at my centre, it's not uncommon for the residents to work >100 hours per week on certain rotations. Depends on the clinical volume of the center, which is often dependent on the catchment area of the program you match to.

mononoke
What if you start a private clinic as an ENT? Wouldn't you bypass employment barriers of getting somebody else to hire you? But where are you going to get the money for the space and equipment for your own private clinic?

bloh
Yes but who would refer to an ENT specialist if you can't operate. If I have a patient that I know requires surgical intervention (ex. tympanostomy tubes, tonsillectomy, etc) and I know you can't do it, I will go down the list to the next surgeon that can. Long story short, the job market is terrible and ENT is one of 2 areas where US and Canada do not have reciprocal practice licences so you'll have to jump through hoops to go to the states. Edict
Does anyone know how much you are paid during a clinical fellowship? Is it still pay based on your PGY scale? Or is it something else?
NLengr
Does anyone know how much you are paid during a clinical fellowship? Is it still pay based on your PGY scale? Or is it something else? Depends on how things are set up. Fellowships for surgery often don't have a set pay system. Some people get a salary comparable to some level of PGY X. Some people are just straight up fee for service and get paid by billing assist fees for the surgery they assist with (some will require you to give them x% of your billings). Some people get grants that pay for some or all of the fellowship. It can be a mixed bag of all three.

How about for cardiology fellowships like EP, Interventional etc?
NLengr
I see, so are these fellowships more or less informal? How about for cardiology fellowships like EP, Interventional etc? Some fellowships are un-accredited and some are accredited. They can range from very informal to very rigid and formal. No idea about cardio stuff. One of the internal med people on the board might know.
