What Canadian schools did you interview at? I think you would have a strong chance at a lot of the research focused MD schools. May need to retake the MCAT and do better, but I think your otherwise extensive academic track record would help alleviate that.

 

And have a good reason for wanting to go to medicine etc.

I interviewed at Dal and have an upcoming interview at Sherbrooke, partly based on NS residency from working.  My applications were pretty rushed last summer and somehow didn't really feel ready for the interview.  So neither the applications nor the interview were optimally done.  In retrospect, the September MCAT may not have been the wise choice, since it cost me application and interview prep time.  I was close for an interview at UBC.  

 

I think I could rewrite the MCAT with much less stress this summer and looks like will have a chance to do more extensive volunteering, including possibly shadowing.  My shadowing contact is a prominent specialist, but I wonder whether family medicine shadowing would be more beneficial for someone a little outside of the health system and also be better looked at.  I feel that my reasons for pursuing medicine are constantly growing and changing, but I don't have as much direct health care experience as a pharmacist or physician assistant.

Most definitely, I hope you get into one of those schools this cycle let's not count you out yet until results come! But definitely think you're on the right track for backup plans.

To keep this short:

If you have to go the US route down the road, I would imagine you have a decent chance at at least mid-tier institutions despite the grades/less than stellar MCAT. A PhD and a post-doc from a prestigious institution actually will matter. Publications will help too. All it takes is one.
