  1. Has anyone done a virtual/online course for ACLS renewal? Just wondering if schools still count it as an "official" ACLS course or if we need to go through Heart and Stroke? Thanks.
  2. Has anyone heard about the integrated care of the elderly FM residency program in Winnipeg? It looks like the first year is pretty similar to the general FM- urban stream in Winnipeg. You don't start anything related to COE until 2nd year. Looking for pros/cons about FM at Manitoba generally or the integrated care of the elderly program. Thanks!!
  3. I went back to med school at 32. I had previously worked as a RN >> NP. While I am one of the older students, I am definitely not the oldest. There are at least 5-6 people who are in their late 30s to early 40s. The hardest part was transitioning from a full time job with a good salary, benefits and pension back to student life. That, and learning how to study for med school as it was different than studying in the other programs I had been in. I'm really happy with my decision to go back and become a MD but you do feel old at times compared to some of the other students fresh out of their undergrads. If you really want it, don't let age stop you. I just read an article today about a guy who started med school at age 43 after having been a car mechanic for 20+ years. Your previous career and experiences will only help you in med school plus you'll look way smarter in 1st year clinical skills labs when you can correctly perform the skill the 1st time and everyone else is bumbling around lol!!!
  4. As a NP who is now a M3, I can comment that it's almost always the EMR that simply labels all providers using it as MD (even SW for example). If you don't go in manually and change the settings for that person, it stays as MD. Alternatively, this NP could have completed her DNP (doctor of nursing practice) which is offered in the USA. It doesn't sound to me as if she were representing herself as an MD, it sounds like a clerical error or misunderstanding at the admin level.
  5. I am wondering about this too. I am thinking about doing either peds or FM. Right now, I am looking at doing 3 peds electives and 4 other electives (2 women's health, 1 derm, 1 geriatrics). Not sure if doing an extra peds elective (so 4 instead of 3) would make me more competitive for peds or if doing the above would be fine as well.
  6. Looks like our footer displays with Applied/Interviewed/Accepted have all been deleted? Anyone know how to put this back?
  7. The prime +2.5% was in reference to provincial/federal loans I thought like OSAP was it not? They were just discussing the differences btw provincial loans vs LOCs in general at that point.
  8. Has anyone gone with the LOC through MD Financial Management (National Bank)?? I like how they do the financial planning with you on an annual basis. The other one I am considering is Scotiabank. TIA.
  9. Time Stamp: 8:09 AM Accepted/Waitlisted/Regrets: ACCEPTED!!!!!! GPA: 3.82 ECs: numerous- involvement on provincial health care panels, teaching at LU/preceptor of students, long time involvement with Girl Guides of Canada, involvement in music x years... Decision (will you accept your offer)? Yes!! Campus: Thunder Bay I am writing this in somewhat of disbelief- I wasn't sure how my interview went although I know I did really well on one station and really poor on another. I think I need time for this to sink in... But super excited and thankful for this opportunity ahead!!!!!!!!!
  10. Yup, raised in the Yukon!! Lived there until age 24, then spent 4 years in S. Ontario and last 3 years in N. Ontario so figure I should be AOK on the context score
  11. Hi all, looking for advice as to whether I should apply or not. I currently work in health care already. Year 1 gpa: 3.43 Year 2: fall semester off for medical reasons, semester 2 gpa: 3.6 Year 3: 3.4 Year 4: 3.74 Year 5: 3.7 *Edit: Overall OMSAS score: 3.493 so am assuming they will round up to 3.5, plus 0.2 gpa boost d/t MPH so 3.7 overall I have also completed consecutive BED (which they don't count from what I can tell, GPA 4.0) and my Masters of Public Health, GPA 3.9 (which gets me an extra 0.2 for gpa). I only want to apply to NOSM so haven't written the MCAT. Numerous scholarships, awards, dean's list spanning over 10 years. Research: -1 article published in a peer review journal -6 other articles published in provincial and local non peer reviewed journals/publications -I have also started to volunteer as a peer reviewer/editor for a peer reviewed journal Professional activities: -on 2 advisory panels for the province 2015-present -on education committee as local rep -numerous community/patient education presentations -am a member of multiple health care organizations/committees Volunteer work: -preceptor for NP students x 2 years -first aider for local community summer games (1 summer) -involvement with local summer camps running medical programs for 5 non-consecutive years (ranging from 1/2 summer to 1 month or several weeks per camp per summer) -worked at mumps outbreak clinic at university as a undergrad (one time) -leader with girl guides of Canada 2 years -president of student run group at university 1 year, student leader with same club 1 year prior to presidency -nursing home visitor x 1 semester -in schools to help teach children to read x 1 semester -1 trip to Mexico to help build a house for a family -extensive church involvement with choir, orchestra, volunteering at soup kitchens, teaching Sunday school, etc. (over 10 years)
