UofT's gpa system and other concerns

My friend mentioned something about UofT having a gpa system which differed from many other universities. He also explained that say for example, a 2.0 on UofT's scale would be 1.2 at another university. Does this hold any truth?

 

Also, more and more people explain to me that UofT is NOT the place for an undergrad in science, especially if you have plans for any highly competitive graduate studies, i.e medicine/dentistry/law etc... Apparently professors do not care about their students & the course work is significantly "harder" than other Universities. Can anyone provide any insight on these issues? Quite possibly students that currently attend UofT? I'm seriously considering UofT and their human biology program. However, even though I know I will put in the work (As I like the courses in HMB) I am getting the feeling that there are too many non-student factors which may affect my grades. Am I wrong? I just don't know who to believe. Thanks for any replies.
