lol @ once they overcome static friction.

First goal is HUGE, I totally agree. If Russia gets the first goal, I'm worried about our chances at recovery. If Canada gets the first goal, they will have the whole crowd cheering at the top of their lungs and it's going to be insane.

Can't wait for the game.

Is anyone watching this swiss-american game....

These announcers are failing to realize that if they can see the goal line from an over head view, then the camera is at an angle even if slight otherwise the crossbar would completely block the view of the goalline.... and just because it appears from that vantage to get over the line, it doesn't mean it's over.

How come Kim's coach is Canadian? Why wouldn't he want to coach Canadian skaters? Kinda weird....

I suggest you watch a short clip:

Basically, she moved to Canada and changed her coach to Canadian Brian Orser because her popularity and crazy media attention in Korea were making it hard for her to stay focused.

Canada rocks. Anyway else annoyed gov't isn't going to continue "own the podium"?

not at all. first of all, what a ridiculous name - we never had even the slightest chance of beating out the US for the most medals in the games, and its fair to say we never will.

second of all, the program was a massive fail. they spend 50-million government dollars plus another 50-million privately funded dollars to help athletes, and we haven't really done much better than we normally do. The US in comparison, a country that has 10 times our population, spent less than half of what we did supporting their athletes, and they are truly owning the podium.

Maybe think about it next time we host the games (and definitely with a more humble/realistic title). but considering what a fiscal disaster this olympics has been, I doubt that will happen any time soon.

plus, who the hell cares about speed-skating, luge, and fricking ice-dancing? those sports are just meant to bide the time while we wait for Canada to win gold in HOCKEY - the one sport in the olympics that more than 50 people in the world actually play.

Haha,

We beat them in Nagano and then in the year leading up to Salt Lake City, the U.S. put $40 million (one year budget, while the $100 million of OTP was spent over 5 years) into the winter team and saw the largest gain in medals between consecutive games in winter Olympic history.

We lost to them by one medal in Turin only a year into Own the Podium and were 5 behind Germany for the outright win. Given those results, while ambitious, the goal was still attainable.

It's not that money should be pulled away from these athletes, or that the program was a bad one. The effort needs to be sustained to see results.

The real difference between the Canadians and Americans is that all of the money for the US is coming from private sponsorship. The Canadian government is good to be contributing to our Olympic team but are fair in saying they shouldn't be the sole providers of funding. Private enterprise in Canada will need to fill the gaps after the Vancouver Olympics. It takes a tonne of money to establish world class sport programs, but much less to maintain them when they are in place.

Even if it didn't translate into the most medals ever, our athletes came into the games with higher rankings than ever and even at these games, we've tied our gold medal record already and will likely break it. They need to change the name of the program. A bunch of dumbasses have misinterpreted its meaning which is unfortunate. Change the name to the Amateur Athlete Excellence Program, or some other cornball name and you'll have no problem at all with the media even if the goals of the program remain exactly the same.

Well said.

"own the podium"

What a name. I don't think it's a failure at all. It's a long overdue program in my opinion. Anyway, you captured my thoughts exactly. :)
