Thanks! NYMC - very friendly interview. They have a nice anatomy lab and the student community seemed close-knit. I didn't really like the residences though, and I'm a big city guy and didn't like that students all lived on campus (I think I'm past the point in my life! )... the students there all seemed to enjoy the school and for clerkship, you can work it out so you do the bulk of your studies in NYC! So that seemed cool too. Overall it was pretty good. The campus isn't the prettiest thing though (there's a jail ON CAMPUS lol)... but eh, such is life sometimes.

 

Good luck with Wayne!! I'll let you know if I find any cool stuff in beantown.

 

Edit: Ooo and they have a really cool MPH program, you can finish it over the 4 years of school... so can get an MPH and MD out of your training.

lol... I liked the anatomy lab too, their buildings seemed pretty new, so that was nice. I hattttteeed the dorms! I actually had a student host, and I couldn't help but onder how they make it through four years in such bad living conditions!I asked one of them what they do for fun, and she said there is a karoke bar in Whiteplains most of the school goes too! Imagine! Just one bar! and everyone goes there!lol

It's really laid back. They usually have your primary stuff before hand so you may get questions out of that. General why SLU, why med questions. Read the SDN interview feedback, it's really all that's in there

Ethics questions may be part of the interview. However, generally US interviewers just want to put a face to the application. In Canada, the focus is on being "fair" whereas in the US, the focus is on getting to know the applicant and the applicant getting to know the school and city. When I was an interviewer for Northwestern, we asked some ethics questions and had some problem solving activities for the applicants to solve (it was a 3-on-3). That was probably the most rigorous interviewer among all the US interviews that I went on.

 

Personally, the Canadian application process has gotten so standardized so as to be detrimental to the process. Typically Canadian, we try to make things "fair" for everyone by applying rigorous rules and cutoffs but in reality, the med school admissions process is never truly fair. American schools look at your whole application, so one weak section is never truly the death knell for your application.

I had one interviewer. It was pretty easy going. he asked me about why US and why not Canada, given the huge differences in health care system. Basically he wanted me to expand upon the differences in health system and wanted to hear that US is way better than Canada.

Yep, no problem. I graduated June '10 and am now doing 2 more courses to finish the last 1.0 credit of the prereqs I'm missing.

 

As long as you get them done by April 30 of the year you would potentially matriculate (with the exception of Penn State and Weill, which both require you to finish all prereqs in the calendar year before matriculation, so for this application cycle it would be by December 2010).

Very few big names this year. Where are the Harvards, Columbias, Yales, etc? And no one got invited to my alma mater yet (Northwestern)? I remember a lot of our members had invites to big name schools last year.

just finished with MSU CHM interivew (Michigan state university).

I have to say that this school is very different from other schools that I have had interviewed at (SUNY, WAYNE, SLU). This community base hospital thing could either be the best idea ever or the worst idea ever.

 

Good luck on others interviewing there. The day was relaxed and had a good flow.

Good luck! NU and Chicago was a great place to spend four years. Chicago is an amazing city, definitely underrated in the US. Most Canadians don't even know where Chicago is, but the midwest is super friendly, it's a great sports town, lots of culture and just an awesome place to spend four years.

Funny you should mention that... I am a columbia med student and the admissions office emails us which schools interviewees come from throughout the week. I've only seen three Canadian schools show up on three separate days: U of T, McGill and Carleton. First interview was on Sept 27th. We usually have 3-4 interview days/week.
