aaronjw
Sigh I haven't completed more than 50% in any courses yet. Boo me
Goku
I wonder how many professors would allow us to use that rule. I feel some of the bio profs wouldn't like students ditching the course without writing the final and still getting credit. Although I really hope otherwise. Falling
I don't think profs would have any power to deny you.
bruhh
I don't think profs would have any power to deny you. Exactly.
Falling
What I'm wondering is if this policy can be used at any point from now until the start of exams. Can I write my next 2 midterms, and then decide if I want to take those grades?
( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)
I would love if someone could confirm my understanding of that document. So in ANY COURSE, regardless of if it's been resumed or not, you have the right to ask the instructor to give you a grade based on the work you've completed as long as it accounts for more than 50% of the course. This would not include participation. But actual assignments (tests, projects). And the instructor basically has to say yes if you've completed at least 50%... Falling
In true York fashion, the document is incredibly vague. We don't know anything for sure at the moment.
decaf
I would also love the option. I emailed a few profs but got mixed answers. One said they can reject the request and others have said they have to check with the department.
bruhh
They will probably send an equally vague email regarding the 50% grade claim soon. Maybe then, we can add up the info and interpret the outcome lol
Falling
I have been informed by a member of the Senate Executive Committee, that the option to have a final grade based on a reduced portion of assessed work (i.e. 50% or more) only applies to graduating students or students that have urgent needs (e.g. expiration of visas). I have been asked to refer you to the following paragraph found on the first page: "All of York’s undergraduate and graduate students have legitimate and understandable desires to complete their courses as soon as possible. However, many are in particularly vulnerable situations or have especially urgent needs, such as international and exchange students facing the expiration of visas, those graduating this term, and those for whom term completion impacts on opportunities for further study. These guidelines have been designed to accommodate a variety of circumstances but in some cases are of particular value to students who have pressing needs." I hope this helps. I believe the Senate Executive Committee is working on revising the vague language in this bulletin. From a prof. Sorry comrades
Falling
Sorry as in, not all of us are in that position. I should be able to take advantage of "those for whom term completion impacts on opportunities for further study" for Biol2070 so I'm okayish. ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)
If we're in a course where the TA has chosen to return to work and is still grading assignments, do you think we'd still be able to use this option?
totallyawesome
So, if we're taking summer courses, we might be able to take advantage?
Falling
I hope so. I'm really starting to hate CUPE. My dislike stems from the fact that they think they are not at all to blame for screwing up the term for undergrads.
aaronjw
It's propaganda. They can't take blame while this is going on
Falling
It's propaganda. They can't take blame while this is going on No, I think they genuinely believe that they are not to blame. I love the "if the employer gave us an offer we could ratify, we would, so it's York's fault". Same reasoning allows them to hold out for just about anything they want. I can't make my real feelings about this known on a med school forum lol
totallyawesome
How did you prepare for the last genetics test, Falling? Did you actually do every problem in the book?
Falling
How did you prepare for the last genetics test, Falling? Did you actually do every problem in the book? For the last test I did. For this one, I am not going to. THe problems in the textbook are kind of terrible. I prepared mostly from a series of old tests.
totallyawesome
I'm finding it difficult to pass the 90 threshold. Getting an A doesn't require much work in most courses(besides MATH1014 lol). I have to admit that I tend to cram though. How do you go from mid-high 80s to 90s? Being in the library 3 hours a day? Falling
For genetics, I just do practice problems. I don't study as much as I should, tbh. I can't really sit still for longer than 30 minutes.
totallyawesome
I forget how to read in tests. That could be it too.
Falling
For genetics, it is hard because the tests are out of 23/24, so you can only afford 2 mistakes a test.
