RiverCityJill
Thanks! yeah I just read that somewhere as well...also can't remember lol. It is a while after CASPer before we get interview invites right ...February/March? I believe last year the interview invites went out Jan. 31. As for how I'm preparing for CASPer, I'm reading Doing Right and making a personal reference sheet (so I have examples of experiences exemplifying attributes they're likely to ask about in some shape or form). Pretty standard prep. I'd like to know what people think of the website where you can do a "mock CASPer". I considered trying it. I think it would be nice to get comfortable with the format, but decided against it because a- it feels almost like cheating to me (that is just for myself, I'm not saying that others who do it are cheating since there isn't anything that says you can't do that) and I have confidence in my ethical reasoning skills without it, and b- since it isn't official, you can't completely trust the results. I'd hate to adjust my approach due to their feedback and have that actually hurt my performance. What does everybody else think of it? Anybody try it? I am hoping my speedy typing will help as well. I saw the mock CASPer site but didn't go to far in depth as I figured they wanted my money...lol do you know what it costs? if it is free I'd do it. I don't even think you have to be alone for the actual CASPer. I think some people do it together (not for me) I am actually trying to be as unscripted as possible for CASPer and my interviews. Trying not to prepare to much so I don't screw up if things don't go they way they "should" discussion wise.

Frankly, I wouldn't trust putting my performance in the hands of anyone else. Then if I do poorly at least I won't be wondering if it's due to someone else's answers. Anyway, on the Mac website I believe it said that research indicated that working in groups didn't tend to improve scores. Of course if you know you struggle with these types of things, then that might not be true for you since you'd benefit from others' input. I just really wish we could see how we scored on it after. Raiya
Are there free copies of Doing Right on the web?
toastman
Not free. You could probably find a torrent. Pretty ironic considering it's an ethics book.
Diceroll2011
I would highly recommend this series for CASPer: http://www.cmaj.ca/cgi/collection/bioethics_for_clinicians_series It's pretty similar to Doing Right (perhaps you will learn why) but covers a wider variety of issues. I'd say reading these articles and having an openness to understand a variety of perspectives is all you need for CASPer.
Patrick1234
typically, how long do ppl usually write for each question? (words). Any successful med students willing to offer any advice? Thanks, do you do it in point form or full sentences?
Diceroll2011
typically, how long do ppl usually write for each question? (words). Any successful med students willing to offer any advice? Thanks, do you do it in point form or full sentences? My answers ranged from anything from 8 sentences to 3 sentences per question. It really depends on the question and what you can get out of your head. Be time cognizant, plan how long you will spend on each question while you are typing. Your answer will never be perfect considering the time constraints, know when enough is enough for a particular question. Point form obviously does not look as good, but may be worthwhile if you have a few seconds left and want to make it seem like you recognized a point. It really is question dependent, jotting down "autonomy" in point form will probably not be useful.
Cottoncandy6827
typically, if we are say using one of ECs as an example. How much detail should be provide for examples? Can anyone recommend a structure for the casper? ie. first mention pros, then cons, then example from personal experience then conclusion or something like that? I'm not asking for anything exact since it obviously depend on the questions but a rough sketch would be helpful to keep in mind. Any thoughts here would be appreciated! Any thoughts here would be appreciated! 1) explore the different perspectives and issues pertaining to the question (i.e. how they may contradict, how it affects the persons involved, etc.) 2) State how you would navigate the situation and why? What principle(s) are you prioritizing and why? 3) Relate to your personal life (I seriously doubt you will have time for this, your priority should be the first two objectives.) Although you may see some "personal" questions.
Cottoncandy6827
Thanks! That's sure a lot to write if we have to do 3 questions in 5 min. Even if we are talking, we normally get 8 mins for MMI for each station...or am I misunderstanding something here? 1) explore the different perspectives and issues pertaining to the question (i.e. how they may contradict, how it affects the persons involved, etc.)2) State how you would navigate the situation and why? Hanmari
Are there free copies of Doing Right on the web? You could probably find a copy in most public libraries or school libraries, if one is accessible to you. That's how I got my copy. Not free. You could probably find a torrent. Patrick1234
in the email they sent, they said 2 of the videos will be used on actual test day. Does that mean the same questions? or same video but with diff questions? anybody that took the test last year have the same experience?
