squishy23456
Why are they changing it? Process seemed to have worked fine for everyone else who got in before and now they adding an extra portion...
pathoma
Why are they changing it? Process seemed to have worked fine for everyone else who got in before and now they adding an extra portion... Probably because the CASPer is harder to "fake", moreso than MMI. The MMI is much more coachable. Studies have shown that practice doesn't change your performance by much. And before people argue that people could get someone else to write it for them, they account for that now.
sunday
Do you guys think it's going to be like the Casper? i think it's going to be CASPer. ugh i don't want to redo it. too many technical problems.

Please explain how casper harder to fake. I don't know much about it just heard that it online and you just type your responses to ethical questions??? Oh and for casper don't they just get you to do it with a webcam on so they know its you and you aren't cheating?

pathoma
CASPer purportedly measure complex ethical, moral and cultural understanding. The test-retest reliability has been validated, meaning that changes in scores from test to test are unlikely to change unless someone has a massive nervous breakdown. What this means is that no manner of practice is going to help you à la Astroff consultingedit: What I meant by 'fake' is that if you don't have the characteristics they're looking for, you can't learn a script of things to say that will help you do well. henslice
I'm not really enthused by this new online component. I wrote the CASPER a few weeks ago, and I'm questioning the validity of the test. There are very significant confounding variables such as typing speed. Nonetheless though, the new test might not even be CASPER or have any resemblance to CASPER; It could be multiple choice for all you know. I feel that if it was CASPER, they would have mentioned it in the email since it's a well known exam. And if it was a different exam, but much like CASPER, why even bother administering it if they can just go with a more rigorously tested CASPER? 1994
I'm not really enthused by this new online component. I wrote the CASPER a few weeks ago, and I'm questioning the validity of the test. There are very significant confounding variables such as typing speed. Off topic but why is typing speed in relation to CASPer always referred to as some huge barrier to success? Everyone knows well ahead of time that being able to type quickly would probably serve them well on the test and there are many ways to improve in a relatively short amount of time. Long answers are also not necessarily better than short answers. You don't need to type at 80 wpm to come up with a good answer. If someone is so stressed for time that they cite their typing proficiency as what sunk them, then they would be better off learning to organize their responses more efficiently imo. On topic - I'm assuming this new component will be weighted as part of the interview (~30% iirc)? Or would it add on to that and make pre-interview weighting worth less? TheApiarist
They will not ask us to write CASPER, since the registration involves an extra fee. It's unfair to not mention that earlier in the application process. My guess is that it will be a recorded video interview (something similar to what they do for Pharmacy admissions at the UofA). It will be a part of the interview for sure.

Btw, just because it costs money doesn't mean maybe U of A is covering the cost? CASPer has been operationalized to be used by other schools. Even a few select residencies are starting to use it (how scary is that? Imagine making it through med school and then getting crushed by a stupid test come residency applications). BoopityBoop
It was a joke... I don't understand how this has to do with med students/docs having a bad rep with other health professionals. In no way did I put down the nursing profession. I think rip is referring to the notion that med students/docs think they are too good to be nurses or any other health care professional but a MD. I also read your comment as an indirect insult on nurses, especially because of the ellipsis at the end of your statement. How I understood your comment was similar to a hypothetical situation where you had just found out that your hypothetical parent (who wasn't a very good at cooking) just told you that they were going to make dinner. E.g. "YAY you I can't wait to have your meatloaf..." But in giving people the benefit of the doubt, I also know that interpreting tone and attitude through text written by a stranger is not the same as interpreting what your close friend would text you. Hence, why I didn't reply to your original comment. I hope that my explanation of the way that I understood your original comment helps you see how other may have also read it. If this can also diffuse any tension, that'll be a bonus as well.

I have always disliked the presumption that (aspiring) MDs put their (future) role ahead of NPs, RNs, LPNs, etc. out of arrogance or to be malicious. chemiosmosis11
On a side note, if this is in fact casper, do you think we will have to write it again if we already wrote it for other schools this cycle? I know no one has a crystal ball, but do you think it's possible we could just send our previous scores somehow?

Chances are they would want us all doing the same one to reduce concerns with reproducibility?
