With USDO being classified as IMG in the CaRMs match, do you still think USDO is a better option vs. Ireland?

Which would you choose?

much better.

You can match to residency easily in the US then come back to Canada for most things.

For Ireland, you aren't able to match to Ireland as a non-EU citzen until all spots are first filled by EU citzens.

yes for this exact reason. Either way it can be a bit complex but having a pathway that will lead back that is much more available is a better option. There is a ton of time/expense involved - far too much to take unnecessary risks.

This is especially true now that the DO and MD residencies are merging and all the DO programs are getting ACGME accreditation. This means that DO residencies that would have been previously not accepted by the Royal College will now be acceptable for reciprocal certification. This makes DO an even better option than it used to be pre-merger.

Yup, over time it seems they are merging! There is a good chance the royal college at some point will be more accommodating. It seems unlikely we are going to be moving backyards here.

Agreed with most of the above - being a US medical student is the ultimate trump card.   Not having the heavy burden of being above average with exam scores, and all the travel back and forth from abroad as a true IMG back to North America.. is priceless (and conversely very expensive the other way around).   Unfortunately, there aren't nearly as many seats for Canadians at USMD/USDO schools. A quick google search shows only about 60 Canadian matriculants to USDO programs in 2018, but may be higher as there are additional matriculants that were listed as dual citizens(some of which being Canadian as the 2nd), that may have been from Canada too.

Many irish/australian/etc grads match back to North America for sure, and there is certainly many more available seats in those jurisdictions willing to take Canadian prospectives.  US tends to have much stricter pre-requisite requirements as well.

Soft factors also apply, being closer in North America makes it easier to come back and forth to Canada for visits, rotations etc.
