Emerge Programs in Canada

Looking at apply to emerge programs in Canada and trying to learn more about each program beyond their websites. I am sure all programs are great but wondering if there that have a reputation for being the best.  I have started to contact residents to learn more about their programs but thought I would make a post and see if people have any thoughts on the different programs here.

If you're talking about the 5 year emergency medicine programs, they are very competitive in Canada (usually top 2-3 in terms of competitiveness) so you're pretty much hoping for what ever you can get. EM in the US has tanked in competitiveness (least competitive program this year) so I think writing the USMLE and applying there as well is not a bad idea for CMG's that really want EM.

I assume you mean EM programs... you're using an odd abbreviation. I was confused what "Emerge" was and if it was some special sort of program... but your post was the third google result for "residency Emerge Program" so yeah...

Emerg/emerge are pretty common short hands for EM.

Anyway, I think most of the Canadian 5 year programs are great. Some have particular strengths (e.g. research in Ottawa) - but at the end of the day, making sure that the people/city of the program are a good fit is the most important.

Emerg is yes, "emerge" is absolutely not. Like I said, this thread was one of the first results when I tried to google what you mean. "Emerg residency" has 188 million google hits and "emerge residency" only 10 million.

If you do this, be aware that people have run into a lot of bureaucratic issues trying to apply for the FRCP examination afterwards since the duration of training is not the same (3-4 in the USA vs 5 in Can).

This is no longer an issue in Ontario where US Certified physicians no longer have to satisfy RC requirements - i.e. US completion and certification is sufficient.
