*** Official 2009-10 Interview Invite Thread for US Schools ***

c17h, I actually have to fly into washington twice (neither school could accommodate the change in interview dates)

Sorry to hear that! At least you have an excuse to take more vacations this year! :D:D

I never received any email notification. I just looked at my status page for the first time in over a week and there was an interview invite.

Congrats rmitch, you're racking up the interviews! ;)

i'm prepping for interviews now, and I'm still not entirely sure how to answer this series of questions: i'm kinda prepared for the Why U.S. question, but what if the interviewer went a step further and asked if you had applied to canadian schools before (I'm applying to the states for the first time, re-applicant to canadian ones), and why you would apply to the states now over Canada?

I've been thinking about this too. I am going to try hard to avoid getting into a corner where that question might be asked ;)

If it does come up, you should be honest. Tell them how much you want to be a doctor. Mitigate the negative aspects of being a re-applicant from Canada by highlighting your determination and will to follow this career path. I would also mention that after having applied to the states, you see clear benefits to going to a US school and re-affirm your "why US" points.

Definitely true that it's a tough question for us Canadian re-applicants. I'm also a tiny bit worried about discussions comparing our health care systems. I'm hoping these interviews will be way more relaxed and conversational than queens was last yr.

Not that you would want to lie if you are considering Canada over the US, but the biggest benefit would be that your education would probably be more advanced. The US schools and hospitals can afford to buy new toys and more other things that here we have few of (ie MRI machines) and with the way medicine is moving towards less invasive procedures, you would probably be better educated and experienced compared to a Canadian program.

I would assume that they will ask your opinion on Obama's proposal for health care reform as it is a hot button topic right now. Best to figure out your opinion soon or at least have a good list of pros and cons from both the current systems.

+1 to alastriss - and the reason the opportunities differ is a result of who pays:

at the u of a we pay something like 14500 in tuition and books and at Vandy it was 42 000USD. One of the reasons it is so cheap for us Canadians is the government subsidization because it costs something like 300 000 to send a kid through medical school. so while the government ensures our educations are strong - where are they going to pull the funds to set up more obscure/specialized opportunities? at the US schools we as students front much more of that bill. And of course private donors are much easier to come by in the US.

In conclusion, i jsut thought i would drop some info on why the opportunities are different and perhaps this can help with interview prep

I am on HOLD at GWU, Connecticut and SUNY Upstate...sucks to be me.

I have just started to believe that hold = almost negligible chance.

Makes me feel that applying to those schools this early was in the end worthless. I could have just applied later and still be in the HOLD pile.

Will they re-review applicants in the order of completion of the app? I hope they do....

when were you complete at SUNY? I was complete on 8/18 and i haven't heard anything yet.

I was complete on Aug 7th.

A good way to check if they are reviewing your application is to see if the Application Status field has disappeared from your status page. It used to say Complete for me before but last few days it disappeared. I called them and they said my file is under review that's why it's not there.
