Honestly, meds are NOT as good looking as the general population, in my opinion. There are lookers in any and every field, but in aggregate, medicine isn't one of them.

Let us define what is attractive first. Despite the 'popular' belief, women are ALOT pickier about looks than men. The difference is that a smooth talking man can convince a woman otherwise. But based on appearance alone - women are alot harsher than men. Lots of studies have shown this. One neet one was by OK CUPID.

Men rated women on a true bell curve without the curve being done. Women rated 80% of the men below average, and only a select few above average.

 

Of course that does not make sense. With a 1-1 ratio - from an external observers point of view, there are as many attractive women as men.

 

And hence the problem with this. EVERYWHERE you go, women will think the men are uglier than the women - and the men meekly accept it. It is not true.

 

In fact, in medicine, I would wager the men are as or more attractive than the average man, while the average female is less attractive than the average female.

 

Want proof? Look at the women in virtually any other faculty and compare to the meds women.

 

In what faculty are the men consistently better looking than the men in meds? Engineering (the only faculty with a male majority)...bwahahahaha. Social Sciences? (only those into pot smoking hippies). Probably kinesiology - but even that faculty is majority female and the men are few. In other words there are few places to find better looking men - maybe law (but the women there once again smoke the women in meds).

 

The stronger male sex drive, and the fact men have to do all the approaching, creates this artificial sensation that the women everywhere are better looking than the men. It is not true. And that harsh truth becomes obvious reality in 5-10 yrs time.

 

That being said..there are some total knockouts in medical school. And I will be seeing a bunch at OMSW!!! See you all at the Frog.

As much as I was going to avoid this thread, I feel I should pass on some wisdom.

 

Guys, you don't want a girl who also goes to medical school. They're gonna be busy, career focused, always talking to you about medicine, expecting you to figure out your own stuff like scheduling daily events, making time to see family, remembering the basics of life. Teachers are where the action is. They're generally super nice and supportive. They do a great job of looking after you because lets face it, as a male physician you are terribly organized and would probably forget to put one foot in front of the other if it wasn't genetically programmed.

 

Short and sweet version: Guys we're stupid at everything outside of medicine and possibly sports. Find someone who helps you with the other 90% of life.

Indians in the USA are probably the richest group per capita...but only 1% of the us population AT MOST, and come from a highly selected population from India - disproportionately doctor, scientists and engineers. You don't get untouchables coming en masse to the USA. In Canada, Indians are nowhere near as rich - heck in Vancouver, the chinese and whites definetely dominate in the wealth department despite lots of Indians there. In the Forbes USA 400, there is only 2 or 3 Indians at most - so they don't dominate at that level in the USA.

I did over 1.5 yrs ago, and I did appologize. However, many whites I know also call London and Kingston hick towns as well. It's hardly as racist as calling a bunch of chinese kids in a group at a local London club 'Chinatown', which is not uncommon. Kind of like how that HW in the UFC with brown pride on his chest is not really racist, but white pride probably would be. Things will change in the future - but minorities often do feel afraid, and pride in who they are helps with self esteem. I'm guessing you are Indian. In what way are east indians faring much better than chinese? They are not super far off each other and I have plenty of brown friends - but virtually any country with a large macro chinese and indian population, the chinese are better off. Malaysia, Singapore, Mauritius, Britain, South AFrica all come to mind. And look at top academic achievement. Of the top 100 in the math and physics competitions in Canada - maybe 1-5 indians at most...maybe 85-90 east asians. And clearly china is > indian economically and militarily. Indians do well in school in the West, no doubt, but some people seem to exagerate their successes. It's like when Indians boast about winning beauty contests or something - it is silly and makes no sense. Anyways, I was attacking the moron that was attacking moslems by saying hindus were the richest religion in the world - which of course is a joke considering that 90% of them live in one of the poorest countries in the world. Few global economists would think Arabs and Indians are generally that successful at the moment. Though as minority groups in the west, some select groups do very well no doubt. Chinese populations, probably due to group work ethics, homogeneity, and a relatively low cultural propensity to be involved in overt crime, are essentially a solid middle/upper middle class society in every country they are in. And several majority ethnic chinese countries/self governing entities are in fact very successful - taiwan, singapore, hong kong, macau. Not to mention the business sector in INdonesia, Malaysia, Thailand, Burma, the Phillipines, and Vietnam are also almost entirely in ethnic Chinese hands.

However, in North America and Europe, jewish, arabs and indians are consistently at the upper class of wealth and literacy. Chinese are solid low to middle classes in these countries. Economists also generally agree with this view also. Jews and Indians also seem to have the lowest crime rates in north america and europe.

 

I don't think there's anything wrong with chinese being lower in income and literacy in north america and europe. They're not poverty stricken or anything. In fact a good deal of ethnic chinese do very well. However, they clearly lag behind jews and indians overall.
