2012 Applicant thread

Lol I'm holding onto the same hope that a lot of premeds get into med and leave PT for us.

I know that last year they overaccepted at Mac and UofT. I don't know what the numbers for Mac were, but I believe UofT accepted 105 students.

I think they will still be over accepting because the U of T people said they didn't do anything differently last year from previous years, it was just a fluke that so many chose to go to U of T.

Over accepting in nothing new as far as I can tell, they do it ever year so lets hope they aren't changing it up. :)

Well then...

I guess we should hope for overacceptance + premeds getting into med!

Best case scenario for all of us! :)

anyway,

i remember a few weeks ago, there was talk of a queen's email coming out before may18 for applicants that they were going to decline for sure (if their application was not competitive enough)

Anyone receive anything like that? Or do we all have super duper applications..

just want to verify if it's true

I am freaking, I was notified that the out of province cut off for u of a was 3.91. They take approx. 15 OOP applicants so say they interviewed 3 people for every spot that's 45 people applying with a gpa above 3.91... UWO only takes 50 people.... That means the first round cutoff could be 3.91+!!!!! F sakes

Last year they sent out that email the day before they were supposed to notify successful applicants (May 19th last year). I heard that in previous years they sent out the email even earlier (as early as a couple weeks before the notification date).

I'll be shocked if the cutoff is any higher than a 3.8ish. Anyways, did you apply to any schools other than UofA and UWO?

Also applied to queens. Someone said last year the cut off was 3.8 whenvthey inquired. Rasta why with the massive increase in u of a cut offs as well as u of t and mcmaster why do u think the UWO cutoff won't go up much, last year 1st end cut off was 3.79. Also last year I believe Mac and uoft stayed pretty much the same. I can't see how UWO won't skyrocket again too?

Yes, Queen's emailed a few applicants 1-2 weeks prior to the May 20 decision date last year if their profile was not competitive enough to make it to the final batch. They did not receive a waiting list offer either.

Are you OOP? If so, that GPA shouldn't come as a surprise; they are always that high so as to promote more in-province applicants. If you are in-province, then the same cut-offs don't apply to you.

The cutoff was a 3.8 for Queens or Alberta?

I'm guessing that UWO won't go up as much because someone posted earlier in this thread that they had only ~20 more applicants this year compared to last. Also are you 100% sure that the Alberta cutoff was 3.91? I'm certain that there were people here with a GPA lower than that who interviewed at Alberta.

Hey! I've been following this thread for a while now but this is my first time posting. I did hear that UofA only interviewed OOP with 3.91 or higher. But UofA's GPA calculation differs from ORPAS. I know this because on ORPAS I have a sGPA of 3.88. But I was invited to UofA for their PT interview.

Question: does anyone know of someone who got into Queens PT with a 3.70ish GPA? (I know that ECs play a big role, but GPA seems to still be weighted heavily)

Yes. People with GPAs lower than 3.70 were also accepted. Like I said, Queen's places heavy emphasis on ECs.

The reason I asked is that there were a couple people waitlisted last year that had a 3.6x with solid ECs so I wasn't completely sure

I think you have a good shot if you have 3.7+, have some solid ECs and answered your supplementary application really well.

Question:

There's been talk about schools & what they're strong in..

U of T -> good network, strong in cardio and neuro

Mac -> PBL(?) - don't know if that's a good thing :eek:

Western -> strong in ortho

what about queens?

the only info i've ever gotten for queens was that they have an odd ball system for choosing students..

Anyone have any other info on the strengths of the ontario schools?

Hey guys,

So I just finished first year with a GPA of 3.52. Any tips for bringing that up? I'm realizing how hard those Bs hit you, and I'm really nervous because I'm in a subjective program as it is (visual arts).

The other thing is that I will (hopefully) be in the concurrent education program, so that will give me 4 more years. How do you think that will impact my GPA calculation? Plus I will be having more subjective courses to deal with.

TL;DR

How much will a 3.52 GPA hurt me (if at all?) and any suggestions for bringing that mark up while taking subjective courses.

3.54 will hurt you big time, need at least 3.7+ now adays. Be carefull with the education program as many classes are pass fail which dont count for physio applications

Queen's has a great reputation for international work.

That being said, all the universities are strong; I believe U of A has one of the best orthopedic minds and Queen's has one of the most respected cardio specialists. You're going to be taught well regardless of the university you choose. Employers know this and do not care about where you get your degree.
