penguin92
never thought i'd see the day. Possibly has to do something with opening up job market (although it's far from being wide open) or more effort to get students introduced to the specialty earlier on in med school. Competitiveness really shot up this year, 40 applicants for 18 english speaking spots.

penguin92
^sorry the applicant numbers I’m basing off from my center. I don’t know the actual numbers yet until carms publishes them but its likely significantly higher than previous years as anecdoctally there were more applicants this year, and serious ones, not simply backing up with rad onc
midi
Wow - it's true. From 7 unfilled last year to 0. What happened?
JohnGrisham
People saw the empty spots and went for it? In the hopes that "look empty spots ... maybe ill get it and the job market will be better later" The job market AFAIK is not any better than it was last year... thestar10
It's a small specialty so its percentages are subject to higher variation than larger programs. That being said, it is an amazing specialty so I've always been surprised it has never been popular.
indefatigable
I'm surprised that radiology had 6 spots left over (2 in English). Is the job market that different between radiology and rad onc?

They are entirely different specialties, with different lifestyles, different compensation etc. Its honest apples to oranges comparing the two. lost__in__space
Also surprised about Rad Onc after last year's unfilled seats. It's so hard to predict what the trends will be sometimes. I thought the job market prospects would still be scaring people away.

I realize they’re quite different, but I’ve still heard of people with interest in both specialties. I was simply curious on a job level whether their outlooks were similar. GrouchoMarx
it was probably used as a backup for the surg applicants that didnt get surg. rads wasnt because its too competitive to be a reliable backup.
