Only 80 IP seats for 2022?

Recommended Posts

Hi!

I saw on the McGill website that they are only anticipating ~80 seats (https://www.mcgill.ca/medadmissions/applying/requirements/general-requirements). I was under the impression that the number of seats had increased due to the government opening seats (https://montrealgazette.com/news/local-news/quebec-expands-admissions-to-medical-schools-by-more-than-100/). Any thoughts?

Hi,

Actually, if you look at the same page from March 6th 2021 through the Wayback Machine (which saves snapshots of previous versions of a website) (Link: https://web.archive.org/web/20210306010416/https://www.mcgill.ca/medadmissions/applying/requirements/general-requirements), you'll find that even back then, it was written that around 80 places were available. They indicate that for the current application process, they have admitted 117 applicants (https://www.mcgill.ca/medadmissions/after-youve-applied/currentapplicantstats). It that sense, it doesn't seem like the policy has changed since last year. Maybe they always write ~80 seats and usually end up selecting around 110-120 students.

Oh nice! Thank you for the update. I think what concerned me was that they updated IMG for the 2022 application cycle, so I figured that everything in the chart would be relevant for 2022. But perhaps you are correct; they write ~80 but select higher!

yeah there are a lot of things that haven't been updated on the website even for last cycle. The Quebec Health minister also said in May that they'd increase medical school admissions "quite significantly" and never announced anything after. Hopefully we'll hear more about it.

That would be great news. I also hope we hear more about it!

It doesn't explicitly state whether that includes Med-P and QC University seats, but it seems likely that it does (unless they're expanding the QC University cohort by 48 places for next year), which would mean ~70 Med-P and ~95 QC University.

But McGill updates its various webpages somewhat haphazardly. I think livok41632 is on to something, but probably the only way we can be certain is if someone contacts admissions directly.
