Thanks for ur replies guys...you certainly encourage me to send my application next year. I don't mean to be a pain in the butt, but because we worry alot before we apply, I have another boggling question on my mind. i was wondering what some of you got as your lowest undergrad grade. I currently have a B- and a couple of Bs on my transcript (from the same semester), and it scares me to think that I might have jeopardized my chances of getting into med, particularly at mcgill where i hear premed students cannot get lower than a B grade to enter the four year program.

Hey Dimitri,

We definitely received the infamous red folder last year--probably about 2 weeks or so after our Minerva status changed...again, they are doing things a bit differently this year, but better to obsess over the folder than the likelihood of an acceptance :-)

Hey Sharks,

I really wouldn't worry about your individual marks as McGill looks at your cGPA and rarely concerns themselves with individual marks (unless there is an anomaly like a failed class or something of the sort)--a B or B- really isnt the end of the world...honestly...

I was at the adissions office this week to hand in my vaccination form and I asked if we would be receiving anything in the mail from them like an offical acceptance letter. Apparently, everything is going to be done electronically. I was really looking forward to getting an actual letter in the mail box :(

I was just wondering for my general knowledge... What arrangement does McGill have for doctors from the middle east in terms of residency positions? Is it true that MI med schools pay mcgill to take on their residents? Does this cut into the residency positions that are posted up by agencies like Carms?

No these positions are funded outside of the listed CaRMS quota.... so the number that you see does NOT include the Middle Eastern Residents who come here to train. I don't know the details of the agreements, but the ministry of health of each country makes arrangements with our government/mcgill to train these doctors. Their salaries and benefits are all assumed by the ME government.... further to that I don't know the details.

To current McGill students~

I got three B+ this last term (my other two classes were A+ and A-). This won't mess up my acceptance, will it? (This might be a ridiculous question, but on another forum one guy got called in to meet with the dean because his final semester was weak.) I think one of them was really an A- (i.e. prof miscalculated) but is it worth it to seek to change it?

Am I simply being paranoid (or insufferable)? :\

I don't work in the Dean's office, but I feel pretty confident in saying there's no way those marks are going to change anything. Might be a little paranoia showing.

Relax! Enjoy summer!

Thanks!

Paranoia is definitely a possibility - but I'll let go of it now. Things have been going so damn well these past few weeks, maybe I'm just waiting for the other shoe to drop... I'm going on vacation this Friday, trying to cover ALL the bases so that I can, in fact, forget about McGill for now. Or (at least) think about it with untainted happiness.

Oh Trustwomen....Yet again we think alike....i have to laugh! So first i get in MCGILL! then i ace my honours thesis...and now i just have to work and play until school. Too bad my paranoia that something is going to go wrong haunts me day and night! An email revolking admissions, denied graduation, low marks, house invasion ending in murder....the usual things. I got a B in one of my classes (5th best mark in the class....do ppl not bell curve anymore??)..its my lowest mark to-date but i dont think i should be worried. NEITHER SHOULD YOU TRUSTWOMEN!! What is ur graduating GPA?? If worste comes to worste just make an appt with france drolet and explain...she's the sweetest lady ever! PS...anyone else pretentious enough to be excited to buy a McGill Med sweater??

Hey Trustwomen,

I'll give you some info because I was paranoid. So I had to pass this 1 course to get my masters. I was afraid I wouldn't even pass it...resulting in me not meeting the conditions of my acceptance...therefore no med school this fall. But I spoke to Michelle one day (not about passing...but talking about something completely unrelated) and he said...as long as you have a bachelors degree and you've passed the "pre med" requirements then we don't care about anything else. I remember you mentioned you had a few degrees. Basically...he said I could QUIT my masters right now and it wouldn't matter I can still start.

So relax...you're in....even if you quit right now :)

Thanks to all (embarrassed about my paranoia now). :)

My final GPA will be about 3.7 I think. My semester was a 3.52. Yes, I feel much better now. It's too late to quit, it's too late to not graduate (I applied a month ago). Basically, I can't screw this up now if I try. That's reassuring. I was even worried about the vaccination stuff (I'm gonna miss the six-week deadline by a couple of days) until the tech from Health Services told me they were still completing the forms of some of last year's students...

I go to Spain on Friday. When I come back, I sign the notary's papers and get the keys to my new home. A few days after that, the credit line goes through, and I can buy a car and start home renovations. This just isn't MY life as I know it, y'understand? The major challenge now is going to be adjusting to having all those things I've been striving for all these years...

Edit: As for the McGill med sweater, James, I won't do it. I refuse to buy any university-logo stuff at all, it's a class statement I'm uncomfortable making. So many people do not have access to university, even in Quebec... it would be (for me) like wearing a sweater saying "I make six figures, beeyatch". Don't get me wrong, I won't judge people for being proud of getting this far, and buying one. Just that one of my challenges in the next four years will be restraining my ego (it has a tendency to swell when stroked, um, maybe I should find another metaphor?) ;)

Here are some technical questions for current meds students. I was wondering if there was a specific line of computers that meds students must have at McGill (like Ottawa)? And also, whether or not we will be recieving a computer package with the software/programs we will require. If this isn't the case, then are there any particular programs I should have loaded onto my laptop before classes begin? All of this was taken care of in an acceptance pkg back in the day of starting my undergrad studies at Queen's. Since McGill won't be sending those red pkgs we've been waiting for, I'm at a loss. What were in those pkgs anyway? Alright, that's it for my ramble...thanks in advance for your help, Cheers. :D

Any computer will do. In fact, you could get away without having one at all, just using the computers at school on occasion. Won't need any specific programs either.

Red packages just had a letter of acceptance, vaccination forms, etc. You can buy one of the folders at the bookstore for a buck if you want the effect.

Hi guys,

I've hard that the line of credit from RBC is the only one recognized by the Quebec med student association. Is this true?

and is RBC really the best deal among banks such as TD, CIBC, and BMO that also offer special line of credits for med student? Has anyone really looked into this?

thanks

get a macbook pro (apple). ive NEVER used a mac before (PC user for years) but this machine is AWESOME. you can load windows XP and mac OS on it.

now the question is...15 or 17 inch?....hmmmm (still haven't got mine yet)

also if you go to apple.ca click on educational store and put mcgill..you'll get 300$ off.

if ne of u guys wait till the semester starts..i can pick one up in the US for you tax free :) (and since the US peso is so low...might benefit for you :) )

since i was the only american in my department (chem eng. grad school at mcgill) i always had a bunch of people make requests (vid camera..computers etc.) when ever i went home for a weekend to boston.

trust me it's weird when u walk into a circuit city and buy 3 of the same digital video cameras on the same credit card! they prob think i stole it!!!

:)

Hi,

I met with a med student and medical resident specialist at RBC (not the one downtown but the branch on Cote Des Neiges) and their plan sounds awesome. There's the free plan that people have described before on this page but now there is a VIP package for 100 dollars/year where you get a VIP status at the bank and a platinum card and 250,000 line of credit, as well as 3 canadian ccounts and one american bank account . I believe she said this package used to be for residents only but now med students can take advantage of it now.

for the laptop, i've never used apple but was seriously considering the new mac powerbook pro but am going to go for a tablet PC instead by IBM because it will be handy to take notes in class this way. I really like the new IBM thinkpads because (although they arent as pretty as the macs) they are super thin and really powerful and functional. I'm waiting until august though to buy it. I don't think a laptop is that essential becuase there are computers everywhere at macmed and on campus and I found that during my undergrad, there were only very few instances where a laptop would be have been needed.

Hey 1984MD,

Yeah that package is wicked. I've had it since February. (I took the 100$ per year package with all those goodies). You even get a safety deposit box. Haha...I dunno if I known anything worth putting in there...

The nice part is you get no banking fees. You can do unlimited transations...get unlimited money orders...american express travelers checks...use your ATM card in any bank and not get charged the 1.50$ or what ever they charge.

I mentioned before...when ever you sign up for any of the Med student packages at RBC...if you refer someone who already has the package they get 100$. So if you refer me we can split it :)

Yeah my prof was telling me to get a tablet. I just don't think the technology is ready yet...I'm still waiting till they get brighter and lighter...

Walk into a future shop and check out the 15.4 inch MacBook Pro. I swear you're not gonna wana put it down!!!

:)

I love the mac book pro but I don't think I'm ready to make the switch to mac yet... I like the non-tablet PC thinkpads by IBM as well because they are so thin and light. The only thing is that they aren't widescreen :( I'm getting a really (REALLY!) good deal on the IBM which is a big plus when comparing to the mac.

So were you able to get the 250,000 LOC as well? Although the RBC person mentioned it, I can't find any info that actually says it's 250,000 and not 150,000 max so I'm not 100% sure if it is only for residents or can med students get it as well... I didn't sign up for it yet, I just had an appointment with the specialist to talk about the packages available and she told me about both of these. I was a bit hesitant to not go to the main branches downtown but hte person I dealt with at cote des neiges was amazing and works directly with the med students and resident federation or something like that. I was worried though that if I went to the branch downtown, every time I'd have to see a consultant, I'd have to wait a long time since most students go to those branches.

Btw, what documentation did you show to prove you were a med student? I showed her my acceptance letter (the conditional one) and she said it wasn't good enough and that I'd need proof of enrollment/registration, etc...

thanks :)

They told me it was 150K while you're in med school and residency, and 250K thereafter. Which is fine with me - what the heck would I do with MORE than 150K right now?

My acceptance letter was OK for proof. McGill sent me one, just the one page, in a brown McGill envelope. Don't know why. Maybe that was the difference? I also got a mortgage at RBC right before that, maybe that factored in as well?

I went to the branch at Sherbrooke and Hampton in NDG.

I happened to call McGill to ask about the red folder thing a little while ago, the lady said she'd ask Michel and get back to me, and I didn't get a call. However, a few days later I got a small brown envelope from Admissions (with my address handwritten) with the single sheet of paper in it. I honestly have no idea whether receiving it had anything to do with my call, as there was no note included. Maybe. I imagine they'd give you one like that if you went to the office and asked, no?

Again, I also got a mortgage with RBC a few days earlier, so maybe they had verified my info already...

Thanks for all the info on laptops everyone. Hoomsy, I would be more than happy to split $100 with ya, however, I doubt that saying "Hoomsy recommended me" will be enough. So if you could email me with your info, that would be great. Just check your ezboard emails, and I've sent you one. As for buying electronics over the boarder...I had the same idea a few days ago and so I did some research. Unfortunately, for a lot of companies, the warranty is not applicable outside the country of purchase. Make sure this isn't the case for Apple before you buy your laptop...that would suck for you to have to pay out of your own pocket for repairs. Also, I will be going with a Sony Vaio, they have great specs and look great!

I went to the RBC on Sherbrooke and Peel. Maggie Hinds is the Account Manager there. Super nice lady. Just show her the printed out .pdf file of your acceptance letter (not the conditional thing).

hmm...e-mail...le tme see if i can find the e-mail function with this chat thing.
