class size :(

Recommended Posts

Just got an email from the Dean of Medicine at the UofAlberta... looks like there is going to be more cuts to the number of students being accepted next year. He didn't give a number yet, but it is confirmed. :(

Just to clarify, does cuts to the number accepted next year mean next year's cycle, or the current cycle?

thanks

Looks like it was just an email to the med students. This would be too cruel of an april fool's joke ::confused:. This is the sentence in the email pertaining to the cuts: " There is no question that the number of medical students to be enrolled into this coming year will be reduced and there will be implications to your education".

Sad day for a lot of people. A bunch of qualified and great applicants aren't going to get accepted. :(

What implications will there be to the education of current students? and thanks for the email. Kinda sad we get information this way....little bits here and there as opposed to official notices.

What kind of implications in the eyes of the dean?

No this is not an April Fool's joke. As much as we'd all love for that to be the case, this however is true and is pretty serious stuff. The effects of such cuts run deeper than just reduction in the incoming class' seats, it effects many fantastic faculty members who may lose their jobs, the department and university with accreditation, and current and incoming medical students since well may potentially lose out on quality training due to the cutbacks.

Not sure, seems quite ambiguous from the email. I'm guessing just the issues you guys have already discussed in the previous pages of this thread. But yeah it is kinda weird how they don't notify the applicants yet, probably they are just waiting until they get an official number or something.

just terrible isn't it? its amazing that this happens after all the money that the medschools have poured into super nice facilities recently. When i visited, i was literally awe-struck by the buildings, etc. To know now that these aren't going to be used to their fullest capacity is really sad. Not sure what else there is left to say that hasnt been said about the UC cuts.

Yeah I too know what it's like to be in your shoes and have to play the waiting game, and not have any information on what is going on. Horrible feeling for sure, but it is worth it.

Dear Applicants,

Please don't take this information too hard. You'll never really know how these recent cuts in seats will affect your admission. Take it from someone that's been in your shoes, just take this time to not worry about your application or your chances of getting in. You did everything you could have done. Please take the time to enjoy your life and have fun with the time you have now, as you never know what tomorrow brings.

Wishing you all the best!

i'm pretty sure it doesn't help right? I get what your saying but i've lost the ability to forget about the wait. Was doing fine till the cuts stories broke loose - it really does change things significantlly. Well, at least for border line applicants like myself. Not trying to over-emphasize it, but just stating the blunt truth.

thanks for the note though. Encouragement is always good i guess

My sincerest apologies to everyone that only a couple days ago I was reassuring you that I didn't think they would do this. Little did I know the government could cut funding so drastically.

I think this is something you should all be contacting your MLAs about. Let them know that a healthy community is the basis of any successful society. Cutting health care education and research is the last thing they should be doing.

For all of you who applied and interviewed, I want to remind you that you were awesome enough to be invited for an interview. Even better, you were invited with the original concept that we would have 189 students next year... so you literally are "the best and brightest". Don't let this discourage you from medical school entirely. If you don't get in this year, try again next year when the market is more stable. On paper and in person, you are a great candidate for medical school and we think a good proportion of you should be doctors. So make sure that happens, and don't give up on your goal (as cheesy as that sounds)

I've copied this message from the UA thread regarding class size cuts (i also suggest contacting local media outlets - tv and papers):

Well folks, since at least some level of cuts seems fairly likely, I think it's time to kick up a pre-emptive stink. Even though any seat cuts will largely be due to reduced funding from the Ministry of Advanced Education and Technology, if we can frame this as a health issue and target the Health Ministry (an area where the current government is extremely sensitive to negative public opinion--just look at the bucketloads of extra cash in the 2010 Health and Wellness budget), I think that there could be some positive outcomes. After all, Zwozdesky has been reversing unpopular health decisions left and right since taking office.

Here are some of the relevant folks. (I would suggest writing to Zwoz, Ed, or Horner and then cc the rest). Remember, one or two letters doesn't make much of a difference, but a whole bunch of letters will--after all, MLAs are obliged to answer each and every one. Increased funding would benefit current medical students as well, so I encourage both applicants and students to take the time to make your concerns known.

Gene Zwozdesky (Minister of Health and Wellness): edmonton.millcreek@assembly.ab.ca or health.minister@gov.ab.ca

Doug Horner (Minister of Advanced Education and Technology): sprucegrovesturgeon.stalbert@assembly.ab.ca

Ed Stelmach (Premier): fortsaskatchewan.vegreville@assembly.ab.ca or premier@gov.ab.ca

Dr. Raj Sherman (Parliamentary Assistant to the Minister of Health and Wellness and current ER doc): edmonton.meadowlark@assembly.ab.ca

Fred Horne (Co-Chair for the Minister's Advisory Committee on Health): edmonton.rutherford@assembly.ab.ca

Dr. David Swann (Leader of the Opposition and former family doc): calgary.mountainview@assembly.ab.ca

Brian Mason (Leader of the NDP): edmonton.highlandsnorwood@assembly.ab.ca

David Eggen (Friends of Medicare): info@friendsofmedicare.org

I'm not sure which thread is taking the lead for discussion on the seat cuts in Alberta (U of C or U of A), so I'll post this twice... I apologize for the redundancy.

Here's an interesting thought:

The oldest baby boomers reach age 60 in 2006.

The average retirement age of physicians in Canada was 70.8 years.

By 2016, we will start to see a large portion of the baby boomer generation of physicians and specialists start to retire.

The government needs to prepare for this mass retirement by educating and training more doctors now.

If they cut the number of seats, I can foresee the government and the public in a mass panic later...

what really makes me upset is that the Alberta government has no problem spending 14 million dollars to "promote" Alberta at the winter olympics but when it comes to education, they don't give a dam.

Voting liberal in next election

Love the Ron Paul avatar btw...you ****ing tool.

Hello everyone,

As indicated in the above link, the news is unfortunate. I know classes end this week and finals are quickly approaching - but hopefully - some of you will take the time to write the letter to our Education Minister, Doug Horner.

For those who are interested - I've included the link regarding his contacting information below.

Regardless of your decision or time commitments - good luck with admissions and your undergraduate finals.

I'm already in med but I'll certainly be writing him a letter, often politicians think in terms of short term financial economic strategy without realizing the long term repercussions of treating the long term ailments people will develop due to our doctor shortage.

If other students were interested I'd be willing to request a group meeting to discuss our concerns.

On an aside, one of my ex-girlfriends wrote Ed Stelmach a long, very well written e-mail 2 years ago and never got a response, paradoxically Noam Chomsky, world renowned linguist and social scientist at MIT responded in 45 minutes; too bad he isn't the premier!
