Thanks!

Also I have been a peer tutor for the past 2 school years. It's a very common EC among med applicants but it won't hurt to have it! The time commitment is minimal with only about 2 hours a week (although you can choose to take more shifts) aside from bi-weekly 45 min meetings. You'll meet plenty of new people which is great, and if you're tutoring bio or chem, you'll get a sweet study room to yourself in the LSB study hall.

Also just want to say that if you're tutoring bio, don't expect many students to drop by. But if you're tutoring chem, you'll be teaching multiple people at once often.

One last note: Their rule is that you must have achieved an A in the course in order to be a tutor.

I think I'll apply for either chem 1000/1001 and bio1000/1001 in the Fall term. Have a pretty packed summer with MCAT and Organic Chem.

Hey I got a 96 ish in chem 1000. Will they look at the number or letter grade? And does the higher grade usually get to be accepted mroe than the lower grade? Sorry im writing this fast- bad grammar.

Also, ah man I have to apply by tommorow! Does anyone know what question 3 means on this link for the statement of interest: http://bethune.yorku.ca/files/2011/11/Peer-Tutor-Recruitment-Letter-SU-FW14-15-final_2.pdf

The question says:How the candidate can contribute to improving and/or promoting the PT Program,

Could someone help clarify the meaning>

They'll look at the letter grade (ps nice work on chem 1000!) Also I'm not familiar with the recruiting process as I've never volunteered to interview new candidates. I'm sure a higher grade will help but it won't guarantee a spot; the interview is important.

Question 3 is basically asking, "What ideas will you bring to the table to make the tutoring program better and more well-known? How will the program benefit with you on the team?" You know, stuff like that. Good luck!

Do you guys know if Biochem 3110 and 3130 are always offered in the summer?

I'm in a pickle in so far as, I could take 2020 and 2021 in the summer alongside ochem I and II, but I'm taking the MCAT this summer (I'll be fine with the work load of 2 courses + mcat). If I don't take 2020 and 2021 this summer, I have to take 3110 and 3130 the following summer.

If I can't get into them the following summer, or if they're not offered, I won't have the prereqs for the 4th year biochem courses and I may not finish my degree that year. As a non-trad, I can't afford (financially and otherwise) to spend another year in undergrad and also, it would jeopardize any offers of admission from Western.

Thoughts?

Edit: Completely disregard that. I'm a moron; the 4th year courses allow 3110 and 3130 as coreqs.

Hey which 4th year courses allow them as coreqs? The only one I know of is 4285.

The only 4th year Biochem class that has them as prereqs is 4290. I'm not sure about courses listed uner Biol instead of Bchm.

Anyways, 4290 requires one of 3110 or 3130 as a prereq. Since 3110 is required for 3130, 3110 should be offered in the Fall term, and 4290 has been offered Fall and Winter the past 2 years.

They stopped offering a few of the 4th year bchm courses, at least through the bchm department.

Another stupid question:

If I do an Honours Major, do I need to add a minor?

Reason I ask is, at U of T (where I did my first degree), one was required to do an honours specialist, double major or honours major + minor.

If I can just do an honours major, it saves me such an incredibly high amount of stress and raises my chances for Canadian and USMD programs.

Nope, you don't need to add a minor and you can just do an honours major.

Does anyone here at York know what gpa you need to get an NSERC?

From what professors have told me, typically you'd need at least 8.2-8.3 or something. However I applied this year with an 8.55 and didn't get one, which shocked my professor beyond belief. I guess it's more competitive now.

I recently just got an email saying that I got an interview for a tutoring position.

Can anyone who has done the interview let me know what to expect, what questions they will ask, and what I should wear? It would help a bunch.

Thanks.

Also, how much money do you make in the 4 months of doing an nserc? plus, can you take a summer school course at the same time as an nserc?

I think you'd get about $6,000 for an NSERC USRA. I read somewhere you're allowed to take only one 3 credit course during the time of an award.

The interview is very laid back. It's conducted by the current peer tutors, so they'll all be about your age. Don't overdress, just wear nice looking clothes. They interview about 20 people at once and divide you into groups. Then you switch between stations; one will ask about ethical scenarios, another will ask you to explain a scientific concept of your choice, etc. Don't even worry about it, very easy.

How should I prepare? Could you tell me all the questions they ask. I really want this position. I'm not the best when it comes to interviews. Also should I brush up on my chem knOwledge before the interview?

How is this program in terms of getting high GPA? I have been offered major scholarship by Queen's, Guelph and York. So confused:). I have heard horror stories about chemistry average. Also,I am concerned about safety at York.

Thanks in advance:)

I will complete the first year Chemistry courses by the end of next week. The courses are not difficult. You need to work hard and do questions from the textbook, but that is all.

I can't comment on safety. I'm a tall, intimidating male.

Have any of you taken biochem 3110 or 3130?

Possible to get an A if taken in the summer? Planning to take them next summer.

I took both this year. A is possible yea.

Also just a side note, the 3110 prof doesn't have a textbook, explains poorly, and his slides are all figures. As a result there were like 30 recorders at the front desk everyday lol.

The 3130 prof is MUCH better.

Thanks. If I major in Biochem over Bio, I'll have to take both + 3 more credits next summer, if not, I can take both the regular year after next. Decisions sigh
