Should I stay close to the hospital?
adhominem replied to neuropsychiat's topic in University of Alberta Medical School
For clerkship you are likely going end up at various sites throughout the city (i.e. RAH, UAH, Mis, etc.), so buy somewhere accessible to transit if you are concerned about commuting. Otherwise, you can shell out cash for a parking pass and not worry about it. Even if you are central and close to the UAH, you will end up commuting in clerkship. -
Hello all, I was trying to look up PARA health and dental benefits but it requires login credentials. I was hoping a current AB resident could please DM me some up to date info on dental, specifically orthodontic (i.e. invisalign) coverage. I found a PDF from 2015, but I am unsure if it has changed much in 5 years. Just trying to figure out if it is worth waiting another 2 years or to go for it now. Thanks!

Research before undergraduate studies
adhominem replied to CaribPirate's topic in Research Discussions
The heritage youth research summer student (HYRS) program is actually exactly what you would be looking for. https://www.ualberta.ca/medicine/about/communities/community-engagement/student-summer-prgms/hyrs-student-summer-research-program-2020 You won't be able to do anything this summer (it's too late, and COVID is an issue), but you could potentially get a position next year. Generally speaking unless you go through a formal program like HYRS you just need to email professors and ask if they would let you work in their lab for the summer.- 11 replies

Do you already have your PhD? That can give you a bit of a leg-up for admissions if you have already convocated (that said, policies vary widely). If you're currently working on your PhD, most policies wont help you at all. How low is your undergrad GPA, broken down year by year? Unless you give specifics about your situation you won't get very good advice. Also look into policies at the schools you're applying for, whether you count as IP, etc.

Another undergrad year or grad school
adhominem replied to measurements's topic in Non-Traditional Applicants/Grad Students
Location? Schools you're planning on applying to? Determine how each school you're considering applying to will calculate your GPA for application purposes, as this will be a key factor for determining where you stand. Have you written the MCAT? If so, what is your score breakdown? Admissions policies vary widely, so these are all crucial details for the best possible advice. Even schools which take your best/last 2 years puts you at 3.65, which is on the lower side. Ideally you want at least a 3.8+ for apps, so another UG year with close to a 4.0 as possible is your best option. -
I think your timeline for writing the MCAT is a little unreasonable, given your lack of background in the key subjects. Taking courses over summer is going to make it nearly impossible to dedicate enough time to prepping, since 10h per week is not nearly enough in my opinion. If you're just starting out in mech engg and have a few more summers at your disposal, I would suggest writing the MCAT next summer so you can dedicate enough time to get a high score. There is no point in writing it without having put in 110% effort into prepping, since a sub-standard score won't do you any good. You likely need time to develop more ECs for your applications anyways. This is a marathon not a sprint. Good luck!

Is CGS-M transferrable between institutions?
adhominem replied to Jonah C's topic in Research Discussions
Kylo is correct, each school is allocated a certain number and they are non-transferable. -
Repeat course in UofA med school GPA Calculation
adhominem replied to ahmadmz's topic in University of Alberta Medical School
They probably count the F because you successfully completed the course (i.e. did not withdraw). -

Neither UofA or UofC have pre-reqs, so those are by far your best options. Honestly since you're IP there it doesn't seem worth it to complete any pre-reqs.
