How is everyone passing the time until match day? I am struggling lol

The wait is giving me flashbacks to Spring 2020 waiting for OMSAS admissions day and I’m just grateful I can have more than a bubble of people to distract me

I am trying to catch up with my non-med friends,  picked up new hobbies that I always wanted to try (Including kickboxing lol) and have been cooking/baking up a storm. :P

I also scheduled my LMCC in Feb so studying for that has been keeping me busy I guess

I apologize if this might be a dumb question, but when you say LMCC, are you referring to the MCCQE1? I am a USMD student that applied to CARMS so I'm not entirely familiar with the system yet.

Hello,
Are there any tips for the rank order list? I currently complete my ROL and I still have difficulty to rank.

Thanks!

There's no secret formula apart from ''Rank according to your personnal preferences''. The algorithm is made to be applicant-proposing, meaning it will always try to match you to your prefered choices.

You also have to remember the match is a binding contract and you will have to go anywhere you are match to. So make sure you could accept all the programs you're ranking.

I had an extremly hard time choosing between two programs during my match.
I was torn forever between :

  • Program 1 :
    • Pros
      • Prestige
      • Reputation
      • Impact of research
      • World leaders in the field are part of the staff
  • Cons :
    • Staff have no time to teach
    • PD didn't seem to care during my rotation/interview
    • Internal conflicts between big egos
  • Program 2 :
    • Pros :
      • Amazing rotation experience
      • Dedicated staff with a lot of teaching opportunities
      • Heavy emphasis on wellness (not just on paper)
    • Cons :
      • Smaller program
      • Average reputation

I ultimately chose program 2.
I now feel so glad as if I have dodged a bullet.

Looking back, I should have asked myself these questions :

  • During your rotations and interviews, where did you feel 'at home'?
  • Where will you be happy, respected and listened to for the next five years?
  • Where did you feel like you could thrive, learn and grow the most?
  • Where are your friends, your support system, your family?
  • Have you talked to residents that are not part of the 'offficial' resident-led events.
  • Look at the last 10 years : did all the residents graduate? why not?

Looking back, I should not have cared at all about :

  • Prestige
  • Reputation
  • 'Exposition'

There are patients everywhere, you can do research anywhere, you can become excellent anywhere, you will become exposed everywhere. If you truly want to do a specific niche, there are fellowships specificaly for that reason.

Trust yourself and don't overthink about it too much.

Any insight on how highly you may truly be ranked if you receive a call/text/email from a program? does it mean you are ranked to match? or do they send these out to like 10 applicants.... any insight appreciated!

this never happened to me! A friend did receive an email after interview from a particular program asking if she had any questions. She replied with questions that were answered. This program was her first choice and she was selected. She applied across Canada and only this program sent an email.

No one knows, this isn't standard and is actually kind of discouraged.

That said the situations I know it happened, the applicant was ranked highly. Still, not really something you should rely on.
